Upon commissioning, he began primary flight training at VT-6, NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida. CDR Hitt was on the Commodore's List at his winging from VT-31 at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas in April 1989. He reported to VP-31 at NAS Moffett Field for initial maritime patrol training. Upon graduation from the "Black Lightning" camp in September 1989, he joined VP-48 where he participated in a split site deployment to NAS Cubi Point, Philippines and NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan. After VP-48's decommissioning, CDR Hitt transferred to VP-40, joining the "Fighting Marlins" early in their 1991 NAF Misawa, Japan deployment. During his first tour he acted as Power Plants Branch Officer, Readiness Officer, Special Projects Officer (EWO), Schedules Officer, Assistant Operations Officer, and Pilot NATOPS Officer as well as Instructor Pilot. Upon completion of his first sea tour in October 1992, he joined VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida, the Atlantic Fleet's Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) completing detachments to Mildenhall, Rio de Janeiro, NS Rota, Spain, NAS Brunswick, Maine and NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. Through FRS consolidation, CDR Hitt was assigned the duties of Aviation Electrical/ Instruments and Ordnance Branch Officer, Fleet Projects Officer, and CNAL Alternate Pilot Evaluator. CDR Hitt departed VP-30 in October 1995 and reported aboard USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64) at NAS North Island, San Diego as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer ("Shooter"). During this tour he also sailed with USS KITTY HAWK in support of their flight operations. While onboard CONSTELLATION, he served as Aviation Fuels Division (V-4) Officer and Catapult and Arresting Gear Division (V-2) Officer, and qualified as Officer of the Deck (Inport) and Assistant Command Duty Officer. He deployed with CONNIE to WESTPAC and the Arabian Gulf in April 1997. CDR Hitt detached from CONSTELLATION in April 1998 and reported to VP-30 for refresher training before arriving at VP-1 for his department head tour. While at VP-1, he deployed to NSF Diego Garcia, and NSA Bahrain. He served as the Screaming Eagles' Safety/NATOPS Officer, Assistant Maintenance Officer, Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer. After completing recruit training at Orlando, Florida, he attended Yeoman "A" School in Meridian, Mississippi. In November 1974 he reported to his first duty station, VT-6 at NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida and was assigned as the Maintenance Department Yeoman. In November 1976 Master Chief Hartman transferred to VP-24 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida where he was assigned as the Officer Records Yeoman and Leading Petty Officer. While attached to VP-24 Master Chief Hartman deployed to NAS Keflavik, Iceland and NAS Sigonella, Sicily. During his tour with VP-24 Master Chief Hartman advanced to Yeoman Second Class. In December 1978 Master Chief Hartman separated from the Navy and enrolled at the University of Wisconsin. He graduated from UW-Madison in December 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Following graduation from college Master Chief Hartman reenlisted in the Naval Reserve Full Time Support program in February 1984 and accepted orders to Personnel Support Activity, New Orleans. In February 1987 Master Chief Hartman transferred to Naval Reserve Readiness Command Region Thirteen in Great Lakes where he was assigned as Training Administrator and Administrative Department Supervisor. While attached to REDCOM Thirteen Master Chief Hartman advanced to Yeoman First Class and was the 1989 Sailor of the Year. Transferring in May 1990 to USS COPELAND (FFG 25) homeported in San Diego, California Master Chief Hartman experienced his first afloat assignment. Assigned as the Ship's Secretary he advanced to Chief Yeoman and qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Officer of the Deck (Underway). In July 1993 Master Chief Hartman reported to Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Readiness Center Salt Lake City as the Administrative Department Head. In April 1994 he was advanced to Senior Chief Yeoman and assumed the additional duties of Command Senior Chief until his transfer in June 1996 to the Flag Writer billet on the staff of Commander, Naval Surface Reserve Force based in NAS New Orleans, Louisiana. In September 1998 Master Chief Hartman transferred to Naval Reserve Readiness Command Region Sixteen in Minneapolis, Minnesota and assumed responsibilities as Director of Command Services and in July of 2000 he transferred to Naval Air Reserve Center Chicago at Naval Training Center Great Lakes and assumed duties as Command Master Chief. In July 2003 Master Chief Hartman transferred to his current assignment of Command Master Chief at Naval Air Reserve Whidbey, NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. I then was assigned to VT-6 at NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida as a instructor pilot in the T-34C. I left the Navy in November of 1979. I went to graduate school for a short period of time before moving to Oshkosh, WI in August of 1980 and joining and becoming a partner and President in my wife’s uncle’s family Real Estate Development and Management business. We built homes, condominiums and apartments in the west coast of Florida and throughout eastern Wisconsin. I remain involved with the business to this day. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned in May 1981. He was designated a Naval Aviator in June 1982 and reported to the "Shooters" of VT-6 as a primary flight instructor under the Selective Return Graduate (SERGRAD) program. In August 1984, Captain Smith joined the "BATTLECATS" of HSL-43 as a commissioning plankowner and made deployments to the Indian Ocean as the Operations Officer of the first SH-60B detachment embarked in USS CROMMELIN (FFG 37) and as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) embarked in USS CURTS (FFG 38) as part of the USS MISSOURI BBBG. He also served as the squadron's Line Division Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, and NATOPS Officer. In November 1988, Captain Smith received orders to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where he earned a Master of Science Degree in Financial Management. Captain Smith reported to HSL-45 in August 1991. During his tour with the "WOLFPACK" he served as the Safety Officer, Operations Officer, and was the OIC of a detachment deployed to the Persian Gulf in USS COWPENS (CG 63). During this cruise COWPENS participated in a Tomahawk cruise missile strike against Iraq and the detachment conducted cross deck flight operations with the Russian destroyer RNS TRIBUTS and its two Helix helicopters. From October 1993 to June 1996, Captain Smith was assigned to the CNO Staff as the Deputy Assistant for the Flying Hour Program under the Director, Naval Air Warfare (N88). He then reported to Maxwell AFB for studies in National Security Affairs at the Air War College. In November 1997, he assumed the duties as HSL-47's Executive Officer and took command of the "SABERHAWKS" in June 1999.
