I was on TAD duty to NAS Moffett Field, California when we received our first P-3. It was actually called a P-3V-1 for a short time. I was later transferred to VP-90 at NAS Glenview, Illinois after serving three years on the Chief of Naval Reserve Staff in NAS New Orleans, Louisiana. I was assigned to VP-90 from 1979 to 1981 as head of Material Control. I always enjoyed my years in the VP Squadrons. I was an Airman (AK) called up from NAS Dallas, Texas. I was assigned to VP-872 at NAS Alameda, California and was with the squadron during all of the nuclear test in the pacific. While at Christmas Island, I was assigned to the flight line crew and worked long hours while the aircrews were racking up all of those flight hours. I remember fondly those months on Christmas Island and Johnson Island. I remember the trips to Por London to visit the British Navy Base and their version of ships stores. Also enjoyed their club. After my tour with VP-872, I served another 19 years in the Navy, retiring in 1984. I can say without a doubt, I think of those days with VP-872 more than any other tour in my career. I still have a patch and photos of the flight line at Christmas Island as well a s a well worn purple ball cap with white letters VP-872. I am currently employed with Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth Texas, responsible for all flight test support for the F-22 at Edwards Air Force Base. I make it out to California often and would like to attend a reunion. I also am currently designing a radio control model of the P2V-5FS and will finish it in the paint scheme of "Bean Stalk 1".
