WAS ATTACHED TO VP-832, VP-834, VP-836, and VP-837. WHEN THE BASE CLOSED IN 1960 I TRANSFERED TO NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania AND SERVED WITH VP-64 AND VP-66. I WAS DISCHARGED WITH 31 YRS CONTINUOUS SERVICE IN 1970. I FLEW AS PLANE CAPT (FLIGHT ENGINEER) FOR ABOUT 16 OF THOSE YRS ON PBY'S, PBM'S, AND P2V'S. I WAS RECALLED FOR THE CUBAN CRISIS IN 1961/62 SERVING WITH VP-837. UPON RETURN I WAS HONORED TO BE NAMED LEADING CHIEF SERVING UNDER CAPT. BRUMME, CAPT WILLIAMS, AND COMM. SEMPKEN. As an aviation "volunteer" right out of bootcamp I did the usual mess cooking, compartment cleaning and the beach crew. I was then assigned to Crew 2 as 2nd Ordnanceman. The memories are numerous. After discharge I changed my rate to mech and joined the Naval Air Reserve in New York and was assigned to VP-836 on 7 December 1957. Flew in P2V-4's, P2V-6M's, P2V-5F's and after advancing up the ladder retired as an AFCM Command Master Chief In HAL-5, a helo squadron stationed at NAS Point Mugu, California.
