Joined at 16 after Pearl Harbor went north about Sept .42 to Dutch Harbor as spare gear for 61 as wasn't qualair. Went back to OTU Sand Point then Oak Harbor and rejoined VP-61 at Umnak as 2nd radio to Mickey Freeman in ED Dilgers crew. Was at Amchitka and on Casco at Attu during invasion. Was wih VP-61 till relieved 11/43 . 1944 was at NAS North Island, San Diego, California. Then up to Oak Harbor and formed crew that ended up with VPB-23 NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii-Saipan-Iwo Jima Ulithi Guam and Pelieu then home. FORT, Howard H. pby5a@juno.com "...After receiving my wings in NAS Corpus Christi, Texas (01SEP43) I was forwarded eventually to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington to land in OTU-A for training. Shortly thereafter I was assigned to VP-61, LCDR C. J.Eastman, CO. Lt. William Perry Exec. I was assigned to Crew 4, PPC E.C. Lindquist, and PP2P LTjg Jim McIntyre. Only crewmember names I can come up with are: "Mouse", Kammerer, "Jonesy", and Sullivan, our ordenance man. We left NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in February of 1944, stopped at Annette Island the first night, then on to NAS Kodiak, Alaska and then to NAS Adak, Alaska where we spent several days training on Loran. Then to our final destination--Attu. In September our crew was selected to escorgt 3 OS2Us as far as Annette on their return to stateside. What a trip! We received orders to return to Dutch Harbor instead of NAS Attu, Alaska, the squadron had been divided into units. In December we recveived unexpected orders to return to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. We had orders for leave waiting for us, and most of us made it home for Christmas.
