Larkins "...The second insignia of Patrol Squadron Four, adopted in place of the rainbow circle, depicted the Griffin, an imaginary creature of Greek mythology with the body and legs of a lion and the wingsand beak of an eagle. Figuratively, the Griffin implies a vigilant and repellant guardian. In medieval Latin the word also signifies "a kind of ship." The Griffin is superimposed upon the numeral four.
