Citation:
The Navy Cross is presented to William N. Thies, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service beyond the call of duty as a Pilot of Seaplane Patrol Squadron FORTY- ONE (VP-41), Patrol Wing FOUR, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Aleutian Islands, Territory of Alaska, during the period 1 through 15 June 1942. Lieutenant Thies made daring, repeated dive-bombing and strafing attacks on Japanese ships and four-motored patrol planes, constantly seeking out and engaging the enemy, despite the hazards of severe weather conditions and fire from antiaircraft and shore batteries, thereby inspiring other members of his squadron to supreme efforts. He participated in all-night patrols and bombing attacks on enemy Japanese ships in Kiska harbor and succeeded in scoring a hit on an enemy transport, all the while defying continuous and heavy antiaircraft fire. Lieutenant Thies outstanding courage, daring airmanship and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

This was VP-41 and it was sometime during the last week of June 1942. A BIT OF HISTORY:  VP-42 History "...On June 4th, 1942 Japanese aircraft from the IJN Ryujo attacked NAS Dutch Harbor, Alaska in the Aleutian Islands. One of the aircraft, a Zero, was damaged by antiaircraft fire. The pilot, Petty Officer Tadayoshi Koga, attempted to safely land his damaged fighter on Akutan Island with his landing gear down. What seemed like solid ground was actually marsh and the Zero flipped on its back trapping Koga inside to drown. Several weeks later - LT Theis flying a PBY Catalina from VP-41 spotted the Zero when the PBY was blown off course by a storm. A search team went to Akutan and with great difficulty, recovered Koga's plane and brought it by barge to NAS Dutch Harbor, Alaska. It was in surprisingly good condition and was the first Zero captured intact by the Americans. The Zero was shipped to NAS North Island, San Diego, California where it was restored to flying condition and tested against Allied aircraft. The Zeros strengths and weaknesses were discovered as a result and successful tactics were developed to combat the near invincible Japanese classic fighter. The Zero was subsequently destroyed in 1944 when an SB2C Helldiver taxied into it. Several parts of the famous Zero are preserved in the Navy Museum @ the Washington Navy Yard in Wash. D.C...."
