 "...BARNETT, CDR Gordon Richard Retired...BARNETT, CDR Gordon Richard USN (Ret) CO VP-4 1962 - 1963 passed away 28 Jan 2014. Gordon R. Barnett joined the Navy in 1942. After earning his wings and commissioning, he served as a pilot with VC-15, VT-97, VT-44 and VX-1. Later assignments included tours in VP-21 and VP-45. Graduation from General Line School at Newport was followed by a tour as an instructor at the Aerial Mine Warfare School, Yorktown, Virginia. A tour on the staff of Commander Fleet Air Wings, U.S. Atlantic Fleet as Aerial Mining Officer and Advanced Undersea Weapons Officer followed. After a tour at the training command at NAS Pensacola, Florida, he reported in 1957 to Commander Service Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet as Allowance/Complement Officer for the Pacific Fleet. In March 1959 his career in ASW patrol plane aviation was renewed with a tour as Administrative Officer of VP-28 followed by a tour as Executive Officer of VP-31 and culminated by a tour as Commanding Officer of VP-4. He retired shortly after completing that tour. A celebration of his life was held at 10:00am on 8 Feb 2014 at the Alamo City Church, 6500 IH 35N, San Antonio, TX 78218..." Connell, USN(ret), CLU, ChFC, CASL of Norfolk, VA passed away January 27, 2014. Born in Norwich, CT on December 08, 1933, he was preceded in death by his son, Philip J. (Rusty) Connell, Jr on April 20, 1981. Left to cherish Phil's memory is widow Sheila Donahoe Connell, formerly of Baltic, CT; daughter Julianne (Julie) Connell Lessig; older brother Colonel Charles R. Connell, III, USA(ret) and wife Roberta of New Smyrna Beach, FL; sister Diane Connell Marchand and husband Norman C. (Chuck) of Midlothian, VA, brother David A. Connell and wife Nancy of Severna Park, MD; and sixteen nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Phil and shared many adventures with him. Phil retired from the U.S. Navy in 1975 after 21 years of service as a Naval Aviator. Following his naval career, Phil became a life insurance agent with the New York Life Insurance Company. He received the Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Advisor for Senior Living designations from the American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. Phil attended the University of CT (UCONN) completing his BS degree with distinction from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He received his Master's Degree in Administration from the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Phil earned his Eagle Scout award at age 13, was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity, a member of the Knights of Columbus and past Grand Knight of Council #367 (the "First Council in the South"), a member of the Father M.J. O'Keefe Assembly of the Fourth degree of the Knights of Columbus and was an active and dedicated member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Norfolk, VA on February 13, 2014 at 10:00 in the morning. Family and friends will be received immediately following at the St. Pius X Catholic School Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, Phil asked that memorial donations be made to the Knights of Columbus KOVAR program, the Columbus Club of Norfolk Building Fund or the Norfolk Emergency Shelter program (NEST). Lost the 12 man life raft out of the port wing on a dark and stormy night in 1959. Scary! Left VP-11 in June of 1960. Spent two years in VP-21 (1966-4/1966). Gone were the days of LT(jg) PPCs. Loved the Navy (still do), but was most upset when my tentative orders to Graduate School became orders to a shore duty station I didn't want to go to doing things I didn't want to do. Left the Navy to go to Michigan State Universtity for my MBA with the option or returning to the Navy, as I remained in the reserves at NAS Grosse ILE, Michigan while I was at STATE. One thing led to another, met my wife while on my cruise back to Brunswick, got engaged, got married, and knew I couldn't bring her into the Navy. Got a "real" job with Texas Instruments making parts for the Skylab missions, Lunar Rover, TFX111 Fighter Bombers, and temperature control devices for ATT's T1 carrier system, Xerox Copiers, Kidney Dialysis equipment, Gyro Stabilization Equipment for missles etc. etc. Quit there after I got bored and joined my father in laws company for year and left there when it wasn't working out. . . now with Miller Brewing in Milwaukee and ready to hang up my beer glasses. I have 22 years in the beer business (Operations and Distribution. . both domestic and international), and am getting ready to move "back home" to Massaschusetts where I hope to settle on Cape Code or else in the Boston Metro area. I too can remember the plane that landed wheels up in Bergstrom Air Force Base Texas. Happened on the day of the change of command ceremony between Ian Johnson and I think Bob Latta. When the messenger from the tower came over to the O club and hit Ian with the bad news (plane over the field with hung up gear), he turned and jokingly said to Bob Latta "Glad it didn't happen on my watch". . . . and then they went to the tower to talk Mickey McGiveren, the pilot, through the various things that could be done to fee the gear. Thing I vividly remember was wrapping what apeared to be a loose cable arounnd a sonobouy to remove the slack, and to then pull on the J Bar (Johnson Bar) to drop the gear. IF memory serves me correctly, the cause was later determined to be something about the "J" hooks in the wheel wells either missing or else installed improperly. I have hundreds, if not thousands of slides of 21 back in the 60's. Mean to go through and title them all some day. . . . they're all in carousels. . just need to be titled. Also have a copy of the squadron insignia on one of those breakwater things from Rota, and a metallic enamled plaque that Chief Watt gave me. Also have an all hands photo of the squadron in my office over my desk.. . . . and too, somewhere I have a listing that Frank Richter gave me that has all of the officers in that picture identified..." Completing most of his high school in Daytona Beach, Fla., He attended the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio and Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. He graduated 1 June, 1957 with a bachelor of arts degree in Science. Upon completion of Aviation Officer Candidate School at Pensacola, Fla., he as commissioned an ensign in September, 1958. He was designated a Naval flight Officer on June 7, 1960. He served with VP-10 and VP-21 from June, 1960 to June, 1963. On March 19, 1960, he was promoted to lieutenant junior grade and in 1963, he reported the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., where he completed the Engineering Science Curriculum. He was promoted to lieutenant on October 1, 1962. In 1964, he reported to VP-31, NAS Moffett Field, California., where he served as personnel officer and a flight and ground instructor in the P-3A aircraft. He attended Fleet Sonar School, Key West, Fla. in June, 1966 and in August, he reported to the NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, where he served as operations officer. In 1967, he was assigned to the U.S. Naval facility, Barbados, West Indies as executive officer. He became commanding officer of that station in 1968. He was promoted to lieutenant commander at this duty station. In 1970, Rear Adm. Hacker reported to VP-47, NAS Moffett Field, California. During this tour, he completed numerous deployments in the P-3C Aircraft to NAS Adak, Alaska and the Western Pacific. He was promoted to commander at VP-47. In 1972, he established the Naval ROTC Unit at Florida A & M University, Tallahassee, Fla., and served as the first professor of Naval Science and commanding officer of this unit. On September 1, 1980, he was designated a rear admiral while serving in this billet. It was my second assignment as I went through boot camp in Deigo and was assigned to th NAS Photo Lab. Six months later I made a swap for VP-12. My first job was on the ramp driving the gas truck. I filled planes for some time until one day I failed to secure the gas filler hoses and it came out of the truck as I drove down the ramp. The Admiral came out of his office and chased me down the ramp. That was my last day on the gas truck. I was 6ft. 3in so I got in the beach crew as a side mounter. I put on beaching gear for some time and then made night check. Sy Sellers was Leading Chief, Buck Tuft (sic) was Metal Smith Chief, Elmer Parker was AMM2, L. L. Davis was an AP and Stinky Davis was a mechanic. I was sent to NAS Jacksonville, Florida for A school, about Jul 1940 just as the Squadron was deploying to Pearl. We had installed the rubber bullet proof tanks and some of the planes had to be fueled at sea as they didn't make it. I spent a lot of time in VP's, VP-7, VP-21 and retired from the Navy while in VP-44. Also VJ62 and ten years in air wings. I also taught at the Aviation Maintenance Officer School. My Navy training was real great and I went into NASA after retirement and was in the early Project Mercury Group. Put Al Shepard, John Glen and Scott Carpenter in their Capsules. Both squadrons were located at NAS Ford Island. We flew PBY-3s until we got our new 5's. After Dec 7, 1941 when the Japs hit us, VP-22 left us to go to VP-101 in the Phillipines via Perth, Austrailia. In April of 42 our squadron left (VP-21) Pearl Harbor to join them. We got to Perth On April 8th,1942 pulling duty along the coast of Western Austrailia, up North to Java, Borneo, New Guinea, Port Moresby, Lae, Moroti Island in the Halmaharas,Woendi in the Biak Group, Los Negros in the Admiralties, Emirau in the New Ireland group, Green Island in the Solomons, Treasuaary Island in the Solomons, Oro Bay in New Guinea, Sepic River in New Guinea, Milne Bay in New Guinea, Rabaul Harbor, all this while Blackcating, and Dumbo, plus God knows what. Our Squadron spent nearly three years in the South Pacific all with VP-101. In October of 1944 we got our orders to return to the states. Our Squadron was then designated as VPB-29. By that time we were all ready to come back home, as our bunch went through the attack in Pearl Harbor, comming out of the Philippines and the rest of what all the squadrons went through. Through the efforts of the PBY Catalina International Association of which all PBY crewmen and Officers who flew the Catalinas should be members of (VP-101, VP-102, VP-22, and VP-21) is known now. I honestly think every one of our men who flew this wonderful aircraft has something to remember that no one else will ever have. To this day I am so proud to have been a crew member of this wonderful plane. One of these days, I will have my notes in the back of my log book be known. McCAUGHEY, Thom (Gopher) thom.mac@verizon.net "...I was in the last AX class at NAS Memphis, Tennessee in '68 before they temporarily closed down and tried to make us all AW's. I was then in the last class to go through P-2V training in VP-30 Det NAS Jacksonville, Florida in '68. After joining VP-21 flying P-2V7's in November '68, like many others I was forced to change to the AW rate in order to keep flying. I was the Julie/ECM operator on CAC-XIV and made the final NAS Sigonella, Sicily deployment before they decomissioned us in November '69. I think the two worst things you could hear were "EXTEND PLE" and "WE'RE GOING TO SIG." I don't remember anyone pulling a WESTPAC deployment complaining as much as anyone that had been to Sicily. It seemed for a while that the best way to get decomissioned was to send me there. After the decomissioning, I was transferred to VP-26 already on a split deployment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland/Lajes. I converted to the P-3B RADAR/MAD position and later qualified in Accoustics. I made another trip to NAS Sigonella, Sicily and finished up with a NAS Bermuda deployment and a UNITAS trip in '71. I was a P-3C Sensor 3 ground phase and in-flight instructor with VP-30 in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland from '72 until their move to NAS Jacksonville, Florida in '75. I spent my final 10 months back in NAS Brunswick, Maine with VP-11 and separated from the Navy in July '76. Since then I have worked at NAWCAD NAS Patuxent River, Maryland at the Chesapeake Test Range. It has kept me close to naval aviation and I get to see the latest and greatest of what is heading to the fleet. It's amazing how many old squadron mates still pass through here..." MORAN, AOC Raymond Thomas...My dad, Raymond Thomas Moran AOC (Retired/deceased), served with VP-21 (April 24, 1940 to January 20, 1942), VP-102 (January 20, 1942 to March 31, 1942) and VP-62 in the Aleutians after he got back from Perth. Do any of you by chance remember him? He was a white Irish Catholic, approx 5'7" tall and 176 lbs. w/brown hair and blue eyes. He was probably a wise guy with a great sense of humor. I have some pictures of him in the 50's but I'll have to search around for those any older than that. I don't know too much about him because he and mom divorced the year I was born. I just received the Bronze Star posthumously for him on April 3, 2009. The Navy has already reissued the rest of his medals to me. If any of you remember my dad please write back. "...NEILSON, AW1 Robert Burns "Bob" Sr...AUBURN -- Auburn – Robert Burns Neilson, Sr., 67, of New Gloucester died Wednesday January 30, 2013 at the Hospice House in Auburn after a period of declining health. He was born on January 6, 1946 in St. Louis, MO, a son of Arthur and Janet (Bulger) Neilson. He was educated in St. Louis schools and graduated from Taylor School, Class of 1964. Shortly after graduating Bob enlisted in the US Navy (VP-21, VP-23, VP-26, NAS Jacksonville, Florida and NAS Memphis, Tennessee) and enjoyed a 20 year career in education and antisubmarine warfare. After his enlistment the family returned to Maine and Bob began a 23 year career with LL Bean. Bob enjoyed sailing and fly fishing. He was known to be able to fix just about anything and was an engineer at heart. He had a great sense of humor and was known as a first rate punster – every pun intended. He possessed a poet's eye and ear and the generosity and heart of a teacher. Bob had a special fondness for the family retreat in Pentwater, MI. Bob will be remembered for his great love of his wife Maggie, his fairness in all things, his openness and acceptance of others, his practicality, diplomacy and overall generosity of spirit. Bob is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margaret "Maggie" (Shenk) Neilson of New Gloucester; his daughter Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Mazzillo and her husband Christopher of Mechanic Falls; his son Robert Burns Neilson, Jr. and his wife Tammy of Danville; his four grandchildren: Megan, Arthur, Christopher and Robert III; his great-grandson Louis V; his brother Hugh Neilson and his wife Pat; his sister Janet Wells and his brother Bill, all of St. Louis, MO; his sisters-in-law: Karen Neilson, Carmen Neilson, Janet Chipman and her husband Keith, Jamie Shenk and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his daughter Lisa Neilson and his brothers Arthur and Dennie and his brother-in-law Bill Shenk.
