As a turret-less P2V aircrewman, I fanaticized about the day the Aero 9 bow turret, the Aero 11 tail turret, and 250CE upper deck turrets would again elevate P2 Truculent Turtle to the status of air warrior of the air and sea, a distinction it once held. But, it was not to happen. When the disillusionment set in, I opted to realign my military career in the USAF crewing up as an AC-130 Spectre Gun Ship Gunner. It was during that assignment that the old fighting instincts that were engrained at VP-1/VP-2 roiled emergence within my soul like the Phoenix of lore, and my hair caught afire (not to be confused with the color of my hair I am a natural redhead!). I embraced the NVA and VC with every ounce of courage and every ounce of lead I had at my disposal. Without getting into the details, I was awarded 9, repeat 9, Distinguished Flying Crosses for those glory days. Each and every one of those 9 medals can be traced to my upbringing in the P2V world of NAS Whidbey Island, Washington - love of life, love of country, love of flying, and love of killing the bastards threatening the American way of life. With all the APS-20 radar anti-clutter circuitry in play in that ice cluttered sea, Pinacle Rock really did look like the mother ship for that Soviet fishing fleet we were rigging. Special apologies go to our Navigator and Taco MacDonald who happened to be sitting up in the Bow and first saw that tall rock coming out of the fog. It's pretty scarry having to take a steep turn like that when you're flying that close to the water (remember the sister squadron VP-2 plane that came back from MAD runs with their searchlight all smashed to smitherines?). COSTELLO, Michael songman66@comcast.net "...After my stint with VP-31 at NAS North Island, San Diego, California, including S.E.R.E. school (who could ever forget S.E.R.E.?), I was MAC airlifted from NAS Alameda, California to NS Sangley Point, Philippines as an "AE" striker with then AT3 Jim Nicklin and then AT2 Bob Ferris in Aug.'67, joining VP-1 in mid-deployment. I checked into the Electric Shop and went on night check with then AE1 H. D. Goodwin (he made AEC while still with VP-1). VP-1 was awarded the N.M.U. Citation for that deployment! I returned to WestPac in August 1968 as an AE3 "MAD-MAN" with Crew 12 (The Dirty Dozen), flying Market-Time patrols and Operation Yankee-Time over the Tonkin Gulf. Anyone remember our sign in the bow of YB-12 (BUNO 135562) "QUIET CREW SLEEPING"? Or how about YB-5 ditching 500 miles west of Guam on our return? No deaths and no injuries. My good buddy AE2 Bob Coffelt was on YB-5. Are you out there, Bob? A couple days later we came through NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii while they were filming "TORA, TORA, TORA"! I remember Crew 12 being the last to land at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington when myself and AO2 Dave Bolen threw an F-4 drag chute out the afterstation hatch. The control tower at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington informed us,"YANKEE BRAVO ONE TWO, YOUR CHUTE IS OUT AND DEPLOYED", as they tried to stifle their laughter! I was with VP-1 during their transition to P-3's in 1969, but only flew in the ORION enough to be eligible for my flight-skins until I separated from the Navy on the first early cut on October 1, 1969. I've been in construction ever since, having served an apprenticeship with the I.B.E.W., of which I've been a member for 30 yrs., and am again becoming a short-timer (3 yrs.,8 mos. 'til retirement!). I would love to hear from VP-1 Shipmates from the 1967-1969 era..." [E-Mail Updated 27FEB2005 | 22JAN2000]

Was in Crew 12 (CD12) for 2 1/2 years as Ordnanceman. Circumnavigated the world in conjunction with deployment to NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan (November 1954 to May 1955). That whole deployment was an adventure of a lifetime and took us to many parts of the world..." [02SEP2009]
CRANDALL, LCDR Woodruff M. "Woody" Retired woodruffcrandall@gmail.com "...I served with VP-22 from 1969 to 1972 as an AWN (my wife says I still Glow in the Dark sometimes!). Great experiences with deployments to NS Sangley Point, Philippines and NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan with Detachments to U-Tapao Royal Thailand Air Force Base, Thailand and NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. I left the Navy to finish College and returned via AOCS in 1975. After all the "Fun & Games" at AOCS I served with VT-10 ("FO" school), VT-29 (Loved those Convairs!!), VP-31 and arrived at VP-1 in 1977 for a deployment to NAS Cubi Point, Philippines and a wonderful Detachment to NAS Agana, Guam. In 1980 headed East to VP-30 as NFO Instructor and Naval Weapons Test Squadron (WST) Czar. 1983 saw me disappear into the Strange World of NMPC Sea Duty Component Det Dallas where my mind was "altered" and fingerprints erased (only kidding-I think). When released from confinement in 1985 had my pay back tour in DC in OP-13. Escaped to NAS Moffett Field, California in 1987 for re-programming at VP-31 then assigned to VP-19 for my DH tour. I had a blast on our NAF Misawa, Japan deployment thanks to the Soviets and Spring Ex 1989. It was amazing to see that many subs in one Op Area and that many P-3s fighting for rights to be ONTOP. We needed an Air Traffic Controller to keep us out of each other's way! After that last great melee, I was shipped off to Armed Forces Staff College and then back to DC to baby sit the NATOPS and Air Tac-Man conferences and publications. Retired in late 1991 and began working for Summit Research Corporation (DOD Contractor) out of Gaithersburg, MD as a Program Manager and recently, Director of Corporate Development. After 8 great years there, moved around to various other contractors until joining Adaptive Methods, Inc in 2003 as a Program Manager for NAVSEA IWS 5 SSQ-89 programs and several others. Currently, serving as Corporate Facility Security Officer and Operations Manager overseeing our 5 office locations across the East Coast. Browsing through the other entries has been a trip into the past and makes me realize just how much I miss the Squadron environment, hard work and fun we all had. Would love to hear from more of my former Shipmates and try to track down some buddies that have vanished. I'm still trying to find that "Bucket of Prop Wash" AWC Gary Dunlap sent me searching for that first week I reported to VP-22! I've reconnected with a number of my VP-22 Shipmates from the 1968 to 1972 era and we gather annually at different locations. We moved from Northern Virginia, just West of DC to Melbourne, FL. Have 2 sons and one granddaughter (She's beautiful!!!) and living in the Boca Raton, FL..." [E-Mail/BIO/PIX Updated 02FEB2019 | E-Mail/BIO/PIX Updated 14APR2010 | 16JUN98]
