I requested for orders to stay at BNAS for one more tour, WISH granted...Went next door to VP-26. I did this so I could spend time with my father before he passed. He was a great man. Beckman, 52, of Pine Street, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at a local hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Elgin, Neb., Jan. 16, 1952, a son of Dick H. and Elaine R. Richart Beckman. He attended Elgin schools and graduated from Randolph High School in 1971. He joined the Navy in 1971. He completed tours of duty at various commands in NAS Point Mugu, California; NAS Patuxent River, Maryland; NAS Norfolk, Virginia; NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania; and NAS Brunswick, Maine. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star, the NATO Medal, The Kuwait Liberation Medal, and 12 additional service medals and ribbons. He qualified as a Naval Aircrewman, Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist, and to wear the Command Master Chief Pin. He retired in 2001 after 30 years service. He enjoyed helping people, volunteering for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, always trying to catch the elusive fish and fast boating up and down the Kennebec River. While there, he completed a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and qualified as Combat Information Center Watch Officer (CICWO) and Officer of the Deck (OOD) Underway. Following flight training in 1974, he was assigned to VP-44, where he served as Nuclear Weapons Training Officer, Pilot Training Officer, and Flight Officer. During this period, he deployed to NS Rota, Spain, NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal, and NAS Bermuda flying the P-3A aircraft. In 1978, he was assigned to the Executive Department at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he served as a Company Officer and Officer Representative for the Naval Academy Sport Parachute Team. During this tour, he earned a Master of Science degree (Public Administration) from the George Washington University. Captain Boniface next served as Communications Officer aboard USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) homeported in Norfolk, VA, where he deployed to the Indian Ocean during the Iran hostage crisis and to the Mediterranean Sea during Lebanon contingency operations. During this period, his department was awarded two COMNAVAIRLANT Battle Efficiency Awards for Communications. Following his tour aboard USS INDEPENDENCE, he reported to VP-10, where he served as Maintenance Officer and P-3C Update II Plane Commander/Instructor Pilot, deploying to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, NAS Bermuda, and western Africa. During this tour, VP-10 was awarded consecutive Arnold J. Isbell Trophys for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Excellence. Captain Boniface was next assigned to the Naval Military Personnel Command in Washington, D.C. where he served as the VP Placement Officer. He subsequently reported as Executive Officer of VP-23 homeported in NAS Brunswick, Maine in 1987. He assumed command of the Squadron in 1988 and conducted deployments to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, NS Rota, Spain, and NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. Following his command tour, he served in the Bureau of Naval Personnel as an Aviation Commander Detailer. Following his subsequent graduation from the National War College, he reported the the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defence (International Security Affairs), where he served in the Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs division as Country Director and Acting Director. Captain Brennock, a native of Cohasset, Mass., attended Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He entered the Navy through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program and was commissioned an ensign in May 1973. In 1987, Captain Brennock served on the staff of CPW-5 as the Logistics/Maintenance Officer before reporting for his command tour with the "Skinny Dragons" of VP-4 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii in 1988. Captain Brennock reported to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in 1990 as Branch Head for Antisubmarine Warfare Long Range Planning and Analysis and as the Joint Mission Area Analyst for Strategic Deterrence. Captain Brennock then returned to the Naval War College in Newport as the Deputy Dean for the Center for Naval Warfare Studies. Made Chief in 1998, was recalled to support VP Squadrons in NAS Sigonella, Sicily during the Kosovo Campaign in 1999, VP-10 and VP-16. After that little excursion I found employment on the Staff of Commander Naval Air Forces Reserve in my hometown of New Orleans as the T56 Tech Rep and I began serving with VP-94 from 2000 until I retired in June of 2005. With the eminent departure of the Reserve Air Staff to Norfolk and the dwindling number of Reserve P-3 and C-130 squadrons I decided to take my leave.
