The picture was taken through the periscope which accounts for the marks on the picture. Balao was providing sub services for the squadron off Key West in the January 1962 timeframe (we left Brunswick to get out of the snow) and we were operating out of Boca Chica. Balao was the submarine used in the movie about the pink submarine or maybe was even called the "Pink Submarine". Even though many coats of paint had been placed over the pink, the pink color continued to leach out. The sail was removed from the boat when she was scrapped and is located on the grounds at the Navy Museum in NAS Anacostia, Washington, D.C.. If you look real close, the pink is still leaching out. One other interesting thing that happened during this period at Key West was that for about three days we could not put our A/C in the hangar even though we continued to use the admin offices. This was due to the U-2 that had landed there with engine problems and was taking up the hangar. He had been doing his thing over Castroland. We were able to get a good, up close and personal look at this very unique A/C..." Contributed by George R. Allender, Captain USN Ret. gallende@arinc.com

VP AircraftAIRCRAFT: P-3 ThumbnailCameraVP-10 P-3 BUNO: Unknown "...Attached is probably one of the most closely guarded photographic failures of VP aviation. Every visitor to your site (and most familiar with VP) have seen the beautiful shot of LJ-1 overflying the Amerigo Vespucci in 1976. As included in CDR Allender's comments however, there was a flip side...LJ-1 was supposed to take LD-7's picture in a similar pass, however the result was badly framed and slightly out of focus. Enclosed then, is that shot of LD-7, so that VP-10 may also have its moment in the sun...My apologies to fellow VP-23 Shipmates, but in fairness to the service, both sides needed to be seen..."
