Flew as radio op. in our P2V-7s., and in the Avionics shop...I was an ARM3/c in VPB-2 1944-1945, flying PBM-3/C and PBM3/E seaplanes. Was an ARM2/c and an ARMAC2/c in VPB-208 in 1945-1947 flying PBM-3 and PBM-5 seaplanes. I flew with "Pappy" Burns, CWO3, as an ARM1/c, changed to AT1, in 1948-1950 and we ferried PBMs and PBY-5 and 5-a seaplanes from NAS Norfolk, Virginia to the west coast for overhaul with VR-31, in NAS Norfolk, Virginia. Rode the aircraft carriers with VA-35 for 4 years and then served with VP-18 during 1961-1963 with crew 13 as radioman, flying in our "hotshot" P2V-7 patrol planes, with "two Turnin", and "two Burnin" . We were the "E" squadron for years and the other squadrons in the wing - VP-5, VP-7, VP-16 had P2V-5 a/c. We thought we should get the first P3V a/c but the "Wing" didn't want 2 squadrons transitioning at the same time, so we kept the 7's. Don't know if they got the P3V before being decommissioned in 1968, since I left the squadron in Mar.1963 and retired as an ATCS. "VP sailors" are all a special breed of cat, and if you don't believe that, check all the wrecked bars around the world! Best wishes to all who had the privilige to fly with 2 or more "fans"..." WESELIS, CDR Jim Retired weselis@sbcglobal.net "...I served with VP-22 (1972 to 1975), VP-31 (1976 to 1979) and VP-17 (1979 to 1981). I was told about this site by another "former" Blue Goose (former AW2, now CAPT TK Hohl). As I reviewed the VPNAVY pages, I was again reminded of all the good times with these three squadrons as a Radio Operator and then IFT. I am currently on Staff at COMNAVAIRPAC as the Asst. Aircraft Maintenance Officer. Yes! I have had a GREAT Career. Reading Larry Forney's account of our adventure on Miako Jima, brought back vivid memories of my one, and only, MAYDAY as a newly reported ATAN. They told me in Radio school that "No one will ever disregard a MAYDAY!" Hey, right! Well, all came out well in the end. When I got my LDO Commission in 1981, little did I know that that would be the last time I'd see a P-3 any closer than from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. My tours after commission were to NAS Pensacola, Florida (1981 to 1983), VAW-114 , NAS Miramar, California and USS CARL VINSON, CVN-70 (1983 to 1986), Personal Exchange Program, United Kingdom (1986 to 1988), VS-38, NAS North Island, San Diego, California and USS RANGER, CV-61 (1988 to 1990), USS RANGER AIMD (1990 to 1993), NAS North Island, San Diego, California AIMD (1993 to 1997), and Pre-Comm Unit/USS BONHOMME RICHARD LHD-6 as the First AIMD Officer (1997 to 1999). I checked into CNAP in July 99, and have decided that 30 years is just about enough. Its been a "good-ride" from E-3 to O-5, and have requested to complete this "first career" in Feb 2001. Would love to hear from any and all former shipmates! Gary Spoon VP-31 / VP-17 ) and Carroll "Dick" Redding (VP-22)..Where are you? Your e-mail addresses are no longer in service! WESTBROOK, Robert F. whetrock@bellsouth.net "...I was a graduate of NAO Class 1 at NAS Pensacola, Florida in 1959. Saw the seaplanes (P5M) landing on the bay and thought they were beautiful. Requested seaplanes when I completed training and served with VP-49 at NAS Bermuda 1961 -1963 as Navigator/Tactical Coordinator on Woodpecker 6. We participated in the Mercury space flights and the Cuban blockade. We rotated a 6 plane detachment out of NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Served briefly with the USS Lake Champlain at the end of the blockade. The P5M was a fun plane. VP-49 was a great squadron and I served with a fine group of men. I am trying to locate LT James R. Arnold who was the copilot on Woodpecker 6. Jim left the Navy in about 1965 and flew for United. The last time I heard from him he was living near Denver - I am trying to locate J. P. A Maldonado, a pilot who served during that same period. I would appreciate any information. John if you happen upon this site drop a line..." [E-Mail/BIO Updated 23MAY2005 | 09JUN99]

WESTON, Larry H. LHWeston@aol.com "...Hello Men and Women of the VP-Navy, those who I have shared with and those that I will, and shall have served with in the future. I began my VP Navy career with VP-17, White Lightnings at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii in 1977 to 1980. I later served a tour with VP-31, Black Lightning, RAG at NAS Moffett Field, California, 1980 to 1984. From 1984 to 1987 I was with VP-19, Big Red! Beginning in 1987 to 1990, I did a tour with NADEP NAS Alameda, California, formerly NARF Alameda. I later did a tour with VP-48 from 1990 to 1991. VP-48 decommissioned and I transferred to VP-47 from 1991 to 1992. The decommissionings really caused a heartbreak for me. So I retired in 1992. I really wished that I had stayed in. I really miss the moonlit glare off the ocean on dark clear nights. If ever given the opportunity again to join the VP-Navy on Active Duty, the CNO would have to personally and physically kick me out. He can't send his friends. I enjoyed and loved all my tours in the VP-Navy. Each tour was unique and none better that the other. Don't believe me? Then just ask anyone who had served with me..." [20AUG98]

WETHERILL, LT Leo G. Retired lwetherill@earthlink.net "...I was a PPC in VPB-199, stationed at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington from September 1944 to June 1945 and remember only to well the accidents you refer to. In checking my log book I find that I flew most of the planes that you listed and remember all to well the fatalities, which actually were few when you consider the kind of flying we were doing. Multi-engine rocketry was experimental, to say nothing about the many weather problems. As you may recall NAS Whidbey Island, Washington was the first Ground Control of Aircraft (GCA) instalation which not only saved my life but many others. I would enjoy hearing from all of you. A special hi and hello to my ex-co-pilots, Ens. Schow, Gray, and Zinn..." [24MAR2000]
