Memorial Picture "...SHACKLETON, John R...Shipmate Pix1983 Air Show...Dear USNPAA Members, I am very saddened to report the recent passing of Mr. John Shackleton. Being one of those “old timers," I have fond memories of John—an individual I consider an icon in the Navy Public Affairs Community. I began working with John back in the 1970’s when I was a mere youngster on the CHINFO News Desk. John was the PAO at NAS Moffett Field, California. Whenever I called him for input on a news query or a question about the P-3 community, John was incredibly responsive. I was always impressed with how much he knew about P-3s and their operational capabilities. In fact, he was so knowledgeable that he almost never said, “I’ll get back to you.” He knew the information—along with some important background that offered an important perspective. He was clearly always on top of things. When I became the AIRPAC PAO and then CINCPACFLT PAO years later, I found John to still be the consummate PAO. I will always associate two words with John—integrity and professionalism. Living and working in the Bay Area is not an easy assignment for any public affairs official. But John was a master at nurturing and maintaining relations with the civilian community. Noise always seemed to be an issue with the community at NAS Moffett. But John ensured the Navy was a welcome neighbor during its tenure there. Mike Sherman, another John Shackleton admirer, reminded me that John was a bastion in the Bay Area’s PRSA chapter. When I think of John, I will always consider him to be one of my mentors. John did not have to wear a Navy uniform to be a mentor, guide, teacher or leader. John was just as much “Mr. Navy” as anyone who wore the uniform. And I was especially impressed with the respect the operators had for John. You could tell they, too, trusted him impeccably. He was one of those individuals who exemplified the phrase, “When John Shackleton spoke, everyone listened.” Everyone he touched had the utmost respect for him. I know John leaves a deep void in the hearts of his family. Our thoughts are with them during this most difficult time—especially as we enter the holiday season. Ed was one of the original members of the Special Project Division, Air Operations Department, NS Sangley Point, Philippines. This was the unit that eventually became VQ-1. We arrived at NS Sangley Point, Philippines in September, 1951, and began operational patrols in early November. Ed was the radioman on Crew 2, P4M-1Q Bureau Number 121451. I had last seen Ed when I left NS Sangley Point, Philippines in September, 1953, until I tracked him down early this year and had talked to him by phone. On October 28 my wife and I were able to visit Ed and his wife Marie during a trip to California . My next deployment was to sunny NAS Bermuda (Auguest 1978 to February 1979). It was my first deployment as Sensor 1. My Sensor 2 was AWAN Doug "Rookie" Nee, my Sensor 3 was AWAN Curt "Kid" Johnson. I had a Radioman and fellow Missourian AX3 Larry "Bones" Reynolds. I think Larry was from Kirksville, MO. Ordanceman AO1 Bob "Animal" Kish with my FE AMEC Bryan "Chief" Johnsen and second mechanic was AD2 Rich Troy. Our TACCO was LT Rick "Red" Miller, with Nav being LT(jg) Phil "Disco" Lanier. The guys who kept the bus in the air were: LCDR Labo or "Bossman" 2P LT Hikade or "Academy" and 3P LT(jg) Sullivan. Our in flight Tech was AT1 Margetts or "Mongo". This was CAC-2 for 1978 to 1979. My third and final cruise was back to NS Rota, Spain/ NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal (December 1979 to May 1980). The crew changed to CAC-9, but most of us stayed together with a few new faces. Like LT Ken "Rocky J" Willett as TACCO, LT. Benavage or "Savage" as Nav. While in VP-10 for 3 1/2 years I participated on the baseball, basketball, and football teams. I am back in Missouri and have been in contact with Curt Johnson. I would love to hear from any old crew or VP-10 members who were in at the same time! (March 1977 through May 1980)..." Was on the flight that was relieved by the patrol aircraft that was jumped by the Mig. Remember standing squadron formation when they were awarded their Air Medals and Purple Hearts. Buddy was Chuck Carnobas. Left the squadron as AE2 in September 1960 for AE-B School. Converted to AX and later served in HS squadrons at Imperial Beach. My next tour was NATC NAS Patuxent River, Maryland from '88 to 91. That was a very interesting tour working with prototype equipment. To bad they shut down the Update IV program. In December of '91 was transfered to VP-49 until they were disestablished in '94. From there I went to VFA-87, the "Golden Warriors". They didn't really know what to do with a VP sailor, but with in 3 months I was running the IWT shop having a great time. My tour there was cut short when I blew my knee out on the Flight Deck. I joined an aircrew just after the crew almost shot itself down in a rocket run on Castle Rock on San Clemente Island. The radome had to be replaced and instead of the normal white, the plane had a blue nose. The bird was nicknamed the Blue Nose Goose. In short order the Seaplanes were phased out and word was that we were going to get the new P-3V Orion Patrol Bombers. First, was the transition to P2V-5 Neptunes and then P2V-7's. I remember modifing all the electronics on these planes with an everlasting list of SAMI's and CAMI's. I was one of the first crew members trained in Lockheed Burbank for Avionics in the P-3V Orion's and upon accepting the new planes the squadron was transfered to NAS Moffett Field, California. In the new planes, I became the Julie/Jezabel Operator and backed up the radar tech. I was the electronics crew chief. Our crew became an Alpha Crew. I remained in the squadron until the squadron was to be deployed to NAS Adak, Alaska and was released to home service in April 1964. I really believe that my time there was one of the best periods in my life; I learned and experienced more than I could ever tell again. I believe that my tour of duty was honorable and valuable to our Nation. When I returned home in 1970 (after being turned down to ship for 6 - but only if VQ-1 could be my assignment which BUPERS said was not permissible), I really did not speak about my experiences to anyone other than persons in the VETS Club on Campus, years later. The Country was not really ready for us; however, the last few weeks have re-kindled my desire to communicate with my friends and again, I welcome hearing from anyone interested, especially my crew members and all others in the Squadron during my tour of Duty. Yes, I remember going from NAS Atsugi, Japan to Tainan to Bankok to DaNang to the PI (to wash our plane) and then back to DaNang then to Korat and back to DaNang and then to the PI again and back to DaNang and then to Tainan and back to NAS Atsugi, Japan.
