RUBBO, ASC Armand "Rube" Retired arubbo@vbgov.com "...Just an AS "yellow gear" guy, stationed at Naval Air Development Center Warminster, PA, from July 1971 through October 1974. retired in 1990, as ASC. Worked on some pretty weird yellow gear used to support some of the ASW aircraft, like the big ol' RY-400 we had for the EC-121 testbed plane. Nice fireball from the exhaust when we put compression on the engine during the startup. Also drew 'skins' and rode the centrifuge 4 times, and did some cold weather survival gear testing. The money wasn't the worth having that probe stuck...never mind. Anyone remember ADR2 Mike Marshall crapping in his ballcap in the back of an S-2E on approach? Pilot threw him out of the plane out near the compass rose. Or ADJ1 Mike Setzer, proprietor of "Hangover Heaven", the A-3 bomb bay? He lived in an old camper next to the guard shack at the new barracks, with an extension cord plugged in for power, and drew BAQ and 'rats. Anyone outrun the cops through the gate, and have the sentry slam the gate shut and turn off the lights? Oh yea, those hot nights at the club..." [11JUN2002]

Made deployments to NAS Adak, Alaska, NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan, and NS Sangley Point, Philippines. My last Pilot was that notorious Lt. Fred "Boom Boom" Baker. A greater P-3 pilot (for me) would be hard to find. He saved our rears one night flying an ASW training flight out of NAS Atsugi, Japan. I was out of the Navy for 5 years and then joined the Reserve Force and flew with VP-67 out of Millington, Tn. for 17 years. About a year after I retired they decommisioned VP-67 and a lot of other squadrons. We should all be very proud of our VP experience. We have served our country well..." RUISCH, Mike mruisch@arch.com "...I flew as an IFT with VP-4 from late '77 to early '82. Met a lot of good people and saw a good chunk of the planet. We deployed to the P.I. and spent time on Midway, Wake, Kwajalien, Guam, Okinowa, Japan, Adak, NSF Diego Garcia and more! Flew search & rescue out of the French island of La Reunion. Chased pirates in the South China Sea. And the squadron got an award for participating in the rescue attempt for the American hostages held in Iran. One of my Navy memories is a check flight out of NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii with Mr. Beasley. The Skipper flew as co-pilot, a Chief named Harnish was picked as FE, another "tweet" (Doug Carruthers) and I were picked as aft observers. They stuck the squadron safety officer back in the galley for most of the flight. We did a very, very thorough pre-flight. I was bringing the tie-down chains up the ladder when Beasley stopped me & with a smile said we don't need them - please put them in the hanger. Back on the plane he walked me around and had me remove anything and everything that couldn't be tightly secured. No food or water, or headphones hanging on a hook. It was really interesting to watch him look over that airplane. We had added an external antenna to the top of the plane & this was to verify it didn't change the flight characteristics. And what a flight that was. It started out simply enough with a nice take off, smooth climb, on into turns, climbs & descents. We went way out over the open ocean. Then he started making it interesting with wing-overs and sharper turns and altitude changes. A couple times we were, if not completly inverted, "close enough for government work" to call it upside-down in my book. He took it straight up till it couldn't do any more, nosed it over straight down at the ocean, and later told me we hit about Mach 0.75 on the way down. He balanced that big bird on the edge of a stall like some sort of acrobat. It was an incredible flight. I remember looking across at Doug sitting in the starboard aft observers seat and seeing his face mirroring mine with eyes bugged out and a huge grin. I was very impressed with his flying and the way he talked to us. A talented pilot and true gentleman..." [01JUL99]

I am currently an IT Director for an electronic and electrical materials distributor here in Atlanta, have two children both Navy kids, and the same wife I had when I was in VP-4. I have one book published on The American Revolution in the Southern Colonies and another history book I am trying to get published. I am currently researching a book on my years in the VP community and would appreciate any material your might desire to contribute. It was an exciting time for all of us. Take care!..." [12DEC2001]

Most likely if any of you remember me from that time period, you'll remember me as that kid who had way too much California in him. What can I say. I arrived at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland fresh out of boot camp and 'A' school as a 24 year old with a wife and one year old son, and left four years later with a daughter added to the family. Serving with VP-68 was the fulfillment of a dream for me at that time and those years remain some of the most memorable of my life. Achieving Aircrewman status as an IFT was icing on the cake. I saw many names I recognized on the Shipmates page: Hap Walker I'll never forget you and Kenny Hoover you too. Many fond memories of deployments to NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal also. RUTLEDGE, AECS Bill Retired brutledge@worldnet.att.net "...Hi to all my Shipmates from 22 years of the Navy. Great bunch of people. VP-10 from 1960 through 1963. What memories from NAS Brunswick, Maine, State Hotel, Ernies, and all the other places we VPers hung out. I flew for all the time I was there on a couple of different crews. I loved the old P2V5F, then to O&R flight test, NAS Alameda, California, flying test flights on P2s , A3 and P-33s. Then to Naval Air Development Center Warminster PA (SECRET PROJECT POTLID) out of Howard AFB Panama where we flew the OP2E and did the work up project for VO-67 which flew sensor missions out of THAILAND over the Ho Chi Minh trail. VO-67 had three of Vp Tens birds that many of from 10 flew on. Two of which were shot down. Got out of the Navy but couldn't hack the slow mode of civilian life and came back in. Since I couldn't get back to VP I volunteered for Vietnam and was sent to Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron 3 where I flew 1634 combat missions as a Door Gunner hanging outside a UH1B at tree top level shooting the bad guys. I was shot down twice and wounded twice. Did three 1 year tours. What a heck of a place for a VP Sailor. I went to VAQ-130 finally got back in the VP comunity. Served with VP-50 then to NAS Miramar where I retired. Would like to hear from old Shipmates..." Website: http://www.seawolf.org/ [URL Added 06JUL2001 | 04JAN2001]
