The finishing touch to the day was some painted label San Miguel and Red Horse, compliments from AECS Ron Wood, mahalo Mate. I'm now a college student working towards a degree in Golf Course and Sports Turf Management and a househusband. Life is GREAT, and transition has been smooth. PAGE, LCDR E. T. III etpage@cotullaairport.com "...I served in VP-22 from 74-77 (Crew 4 initially, then Crew 12). The people and experiences during these years were the best ever, and enriched my life beyond description. The places we went and the things we did are almost surreal as I look back on them, but we know they really happened and we were a part of history in the making. On the lighter side, I still enjoy remembering back to those "man-eating crabs" on Diego Garcia, as Time magazine described them, and so many other things that the media was so clueless about that we did and experienced on a regular basis. My fondest memories include being a part of Crew 12; what a great crew. What I learned during this tour has served me well throughout my life. After leaving VP-22, I instructed in T-28's in VT-31 (77-78) at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas which was FUN as well as rewarding. Later, I was able to fly in the Reserves (VP-67, NAS Memphis, Tennessee) a few years, but unfortunately I got too busy to stay in. I'm still spending my time managing an airport business in South Texas these days. It would be nice to touch base with former squadron mates if you are so inclined. They had no parachute loft, they didn't seem to have an assignment for me and the ship went to odd place. It went up the Saigon river (remember the French were still fighting there in 1953) and picked up Vietnamese sailors, then the ship went to Bangkok. Afte thirty days it returned to the Phillipines. PATZMANN, Bruce R. patzmann@msn.com "...I was in VP-16 from September 1962 to July 1967. I was a junior pilot at the time, just out of flight school. The new guys did not go thru the RAG pilot training. We only did the NAV training at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, and we all hated it. Our flight training was done in the squadron. It was when the squadron got the first P-3A aicraft, weapon system, without APU's and the two speed gearbox on #4. We deployed to NAS Bermuda twice, Norway with NATO, and to NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam during my tour of duty..." [02MAY2002]

PAULES, AE2 James jrpaules@msn.com "...I served with VQ-2 (1970-07/1972). I got married on my way from Naval Weapons Test Squadron (WST) at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to NS Rota, Spain and brought my wife along to Spain. She was a freshman in college and picked up a few courses from the University of Maryland while we were there. I did one deployment on an aircraft carrier to support the "whales" and then decided I’d rather be an air crewman. I got qualified as the aviation electrician’s mate (i.e. cook) and an ECM Operator. VQ-2 was transitioning from the Super Connies to the P-3’s and since I wasn’t going to make the Navy my career, I got assigned to one of the Super Connie crews. I made several deployments to Athens and NAS Key West, Floridat and even got to go on a NATO exercise to Iceland and Norway … even got my "Blue Nose" card for going above the Arctic Circle. After I got out of the Navy I used my GI Benefits to get an Electrical Engineering degree from Penn State and then worked 33+ years at Three Mile Island..." [11MAR2014]

PAYNE, Jim Jim Payne/ANTHONYROSS@ANTHONYROSS.COM "...I was Air Crew PH in VP-48 from 1984 to 1987 then went to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. CDR Bushnell asked me to design a patch without the bird. I took the P-3 out of the front of the NATOPS. When it was submitted as our "official" patch it was not approved because it had a picture of the aircraft on it and only one fold was allowed in each end of the top and bottom banners. PAYTON, AMCS Don Retired DJRSP@aol.com "...serving with VP-65 at NAS Point Mugu, California at the tail end of the P-2 era and just starting the P-3 transition (73-74) and with VP-68 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland (74-76). It is interesting to see how squadrons have carried on and how many now have disestablished and we only have our memories and memorablia remaining of times past. To those of VP-90, "Skinny" Brown was NOT exaggerating about about his and Mike's FE class shrinking from 16 to 3. I was one those who disappeared from FE Class 7601. There were many reserves in that class. Interesting though is that the 2 reservists ended up with a long flying career and the reamaining active duty sailor didn't. Ask Skinny about the FE trainee from VP-60 who slapped the full Commander's hands for being on the power levers in the simulator! Anybody from VP-68 remember the name of the SAR FE who used to commute from West Virginia every weekend to fly? He was another legend and we often wondered about his home life. Though I went back on active duty with E-2's, what I learned as an aircrewman helped me to be a much better Metalsmith and Maintenance Chief. Yes for those of you who where at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii in the late 80's I was the Production Control Chief who gave you a hard time..." [06FEB98]
