KUCHAN, SKC Phil pkuchan@msn.com "...I was one of original crew that commissioned the USS Kenneth Whiting (AV-14) at Tacoma, Washington on May 8, 1944. I was in the "S" Division as SK2, then made SK1 while aboard. I survived the Kamikaze attack on us on June 21, 1945 and witnessed several of our Shipmates being wounded and one that made the final call. I left the ship in March 1946 upon return from Hong Kong. The USS Kenneth Whiting (AV-14) was the first Seaplane Tender named after an individual, Captain Whiting, the father of the aircraft carrier instead of a body of water. Captain Whiting was a first in many things. The Kenneth Whiting was a good ship, with a very good crew and a good skipper. We paved the way for the rest of you that served on her up until 1961 when she made her final voage and subsequently scrapped. I will never ever forget my days aboard her. God Bless. Phil Kuchan, SK1 and then SKC at Yokosuka, 1950-1952. Amen..." [04AUG2003]

KUEPFER, NC1 Genny beuwolf@comcast.net "...A pleasant rush of faces, places, and planes flood my mind when I hear the name VP-19. I served as the last Command Career Counselor (1989-1991). In the 13 years I served in the U. S. Navy, VP-19, despite demanding missions and high stress, to this day, remains my favorite command. My only wish is that American people could have seen this command sacrifice so much of their personal lives, time away from their families, and putting personal interest on hold in order to meet the demands placed upon VP-19 while I servered with them. As a career counselor, mainly working a desk job, it was truly heart warming to see my Shipmates take their jobs so seriously, ensure the job was done to perfection, and make the impossible happen. I'm truly proud to say I served in VP-19 and served with the best of the Navy. I encourage anyone who I served with to please get in touch and let me know how you're doing..." [26MAY2004]

My first flight as radio operator out of code school was to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada and had deployments to NAS Sigonella, Sicily, and the Key West det. After being 'out' 1 1/2 years I came back in the Navy and my 8265 NEC got me back to NAS Brunswick, Maine. In VP-11 I transisioned from the P2V7 to the P-3B. I was there from May 1966 to September 1969 with trips to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. Went to 'B' school then back to NAS Brunswick, Maine, this time VP-44 flying the P-3A with NS Rota, Spain and a NAS Bermuda deployments. Had a shore tour in a NAS Pensacola, Florida, then back to NAS Brunswick, Maine for another tour in VP-11 from February 1978 to May 1981. Began my VP career as an ATS3 radio operator and it seems I got to do just about every thing on aircraft, even got to fly one for a short while. Ended it as an ATCS IFT. Looking back, I have no regrets and enjoyed being in the VP Navy. After retiring in 1984, I got a job with a government contractor here in Pensacola tracking helicopter parts for the NADEP.
