"...JOHNSON, Norris A....It is with heavy heart that I post the death of my Grandfather Capt. Norris A. Johnson USN(Ret). He passed this morning with a Love for the Navy in his heart. He was PPC of CAC6, VPB-106 1944-1945 during the Marianas Campaign. His Skipper was Chick Hayward, and he loved VP and his old Shipmates. He was his squadron historian for many years. I grew up listening to his stories and was fortunate enough to meet many of his squadron mates. His son (my Uncle), was an AW1 (SS1) on P-3A/B's, and now I'm 3rd generation as a P-3 Flight Engineer. I've served in VP-4, VP-60, VP-92, and now VP-94. Long live VP!! I hope if any of his old squadron mates are out there, they think of him today...CARR, AMC(AW/NAC) Sue sucar99@aol.com..." [19SEP2001]

"...JOHNSTON, AMCS Brian "Pig Farmer"...Brian "Pig Farmer" Johnston was an Airframer extraordinaire and the FE Deluxe. They've only made a couple of those. He flew for VP-64 (twice), VP-67, VP-91, VP-62, RESPATWING, HC-85, and VR-58. He was the most laid-back FE I have ever known, and one of the best friends you could ever want. He died in June, 2005 of natural causes; albeit at a very young age. Brian would lay some FE knowledge on you, and no matter how far behind the power curve you (I) might have been, he would never make you (me) feel stupid. He posessed no ego whatsoever, and once he put on khaki, he never forgot where he came from. True to that credo, he always tried to pull others up to where he was. In every respect, he was a true Chief and Blue Card FE. More importantly, he was a friend. Pig Farmer is sorely missed by all of those who had the opportunity to know him..." JOHNSON, David H. "Hector" LP849@AOL.com "...Not much on NAS Bermuda, as it was called Marlin's Roost, not NAS, while we flew P5Ms. I was on crew LP-8, called the Huslers. AT that time I was AMS3. WE flew in rotation with VP-45 between NAS Bermuda, and NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Cuban Blockaid, from fall 1962 to August 1963. In that year the squadron Logo, was changed from flying whale to "No Sanc.in the Deep." A 2nd class by the Name of Caldwell, designed it and painted on the Bda hanger. I have a leather tooled briefcase he maded for me. My Plane LP-8 5542, was the last plane flown into NAS Norfolk, Virginia August 28, 1963. I was last one off, and said my Goodbyes, and took our Pinup girl from under Navigation Table. As we worked with these planes, we called them; 2-boat or 8-boat ect. If sick of them we called them Pig Boats. I remember many flights during our early space shots. We then transported to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to catch up with the rest of the men and new ones from P-3A school. I went back to the shop, and setup the squadron Corrosion Control Program for our A/C. I recall placing alot of Lighting Bolts and decals of our new Logo on the nose of our dark sea plane gray P-3As. The first deployment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, March of 1965, a base truck hit the wing of our new plane. It was down the whole time as we repaired it. I figured God forgot that area of the world after being in NAS Bermuda. We where restricted to base because of the Red Bear was our enemy. Im looking for any old flight buddies of LP-8 that may recall me. I was Nicked name "Hector". If you are one of the following crew nicknames check in. Moose, Big John, Burt, Mike, Carp, Burp Bag Folyd, Mr. Jacobs Plane Commander, Mr. Higginbothm Ens., and Warren Navigator. Good Luck to you all where ever you are. JOHNSON, MAJOR Steven G. Retired majorjunque@msn.com "...In March 1965 I joined the Naval Air Reserve at NAS Los Alamitos, California after graduating from Reseda High School (San Fernando Valley). After completing the resident "boot" training at NAS Los Alamitos, California I was assigned to VP-772 and eventually got to fly on the P2V's. VP-772's annual training/cruise that year was spent at NAS Moffett Field, California. I'll never forget the flight up (at night) as I was allowed to occupy the "bow observers" position in the nose all the way. While at NAS Moffett Field, California for the cruise we operated out of Hanger #1. During that time, I remember one flight out over Monterey Bay when the Ordnanceman couldn't get the launch tube to operate. Honest-to-god, he opened the rear belly hatch and had me hook my arms thru his harness while he straddled the opening and lobbed the sonabouys out. I was only 18 at the time and will never forget that moment. Disallusioned with college, I opted to do my 2 years "active duty" early (15 Nov 65) and was assigned to VP-31 Detachment Alpha at NAS Moffett Field, California in January 1966. The unit was just receiving P-3A's at the time and still had the earlier P-3's that required the external APU (looked like a belly tank on wheels) for startup. The main body of the unit (VP-31) was still at NAS North Island, San Diego, California at the time and flying P-5 Marlins. During my time at NAS Moffett Field, California, the units designation changed twice: VP-31 Detachment Alpha, VP-31 Detachment NAS Moffett Field, California, and eventually VP-31 (those left at San Diego became Detachment NAS North Island, San Diego, California). My final 8 months (April 1967 to November 1967) at VP-31 were spent as the NATOPS yeoman working for CDR J. R. White, LCDR "Bud" Tucker, and CPO Ted Glass. The time I spent in the Naval Air Reserve was the most memorable for me. After completing my 1st AA degree years later (1978), I thought of returning to the Naval Air Reserve but was instead offered a chance at OCS and a commission in the Calif. Army National Guard. As I was already 31 years old at the time, it took a lot of help from several Generals to get me accepted as the federal age limit for 2nd Lieutenants is 32 1/2. I eventually commanded an M-110 (8") Heavy Artillery Battery ("C" Battery, 1-144th FA, 40th INF DIV-MECHANIZED). I retired from the Calif. Army National Guard 3 years ago as a Major, Field Artillery. Quite a change from being an AXAN in the Navy. I would be more than happy to hear/correspond with anyone who served with either VP-31 or VP-772..." [02JUN2002]
