Memorial Picture Shipmate Pix "...JENKINS, AVCM William H...William H. Jenkins passed away peacefully in his home Tuesday, March 7th following a long battle with cancer. Harvey was born in Washington, DC August 12, 1938 but resided the last 33 years in Orange Park having retired from a 30 year Naval Career. He is survived by his devoted wife, Elbreta (Al) Jenkins; daughters: Wendy and Kelley Jenkins; son, William and his wife, Jill and their sons: Fenn, Jack and Will Jenkins and their daughter, Meredith "Meri" and her husband, Robert Pyle and their daughter Erin and son William Pyle. He is also survived by his cousin, Linda Martin. He was a past Master of Orange Park Lodge #267 F&AM, a past Patron of Orange Park OES #226, and a member of the Middleburg Presbyterian Church. A viewing will be held Thursday, 6-8 PM on March 9th and funeral services will be held Friday, 11 AM, March 10th at HOLLY HILL FUNERAL HOME, 3601 Old Jennings Rd, Middleburg. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to OP Lodge #267 F&AM and Middleburg Presbyterian Church. AWCM Jenkins, a native of Washington D.C., began his naval career in September 1955 with tours of duty in VP-622, NAS Anacostia, Washington, D.C. and later VP-861 at NAS New York, New York. His next assignment included NAS Pensacola, Florida at "A" and "B" schools at NATTC Memphis, Tennessee and VP-8. He then served with the Federal German Naval Air Wing at FGNAS Nordholz, West Germany, where he earned designation as an ASW aircrewman in the BR-1150 Atlantic ASW aircraft. Following a tour with VP-30 he was transferred to the staff of Commander Fleet Air, Keflavik, Iceland, where he served as Tactical Support Center Watch Officer. He joined the USS Saratoga (CV-60) as ASW Watch Officer in 1974, following his tour with service on the staff of Commander Air ASW Wing One, Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida. He reported to VP-24 in January 1980 and assumed the duties of Command Master Chief until June 1985 retiring with 30 years of Naval Service..." So good that after a few months in HU-1, I begged back into WILLY VICTORS and spent an exciting and gradifing career in VW-11 from 1960-1962. We left NAS Miramar for NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in Feb. of 48. At that time I was an AEM striker working for Chief "Red" Neil. He went on to become a WO. We made One deployment to NAS Adak, Alaska in 48, and at least two to NAS Kodiak, Alaska before the Korean thing started. At the time there were 3 VP Sqds. at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. VP-1, VP-4, and VP-6. We all left NAS Whidbey Island, Washington at the same time. VP-1 to NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan, VP-4 to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. and VP-6 to Tachikawa JP. I have several pictures of the aircraft as well as some of the people assigned to VP-1 back then. I left VP-1 in early 51 and joined FASRON-112 at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. Upon graduation from the Academy on June 2, 1938, he was assigned to the U. S. S. Maryland, and remained aboard until 1939. He then served aboard the U. S. S. Tucker until September of 1940. In September 1940, Commander Jensen entered Flight Training at Pensacola, receiving his wings in April 1941. He was assigned to VP-12 (which was later changed to VP-24), until October 1943. In November 1943, he proceeded to NAS Jacksonville, Florida, where he was assigned to VPB-201 until July of 1945. In July 1945, Commander Jensen was ordered to NAS Hutchinson, Kansas, for one month training in PB4Y-2A's. In the latter part of August, he reported to Naval Air Station, Miami, Florida, for duty. He was attached to that station until November 1945, when he was ordered to duty at NAAS Camp Kearny, California. Commander Jensen reported aboard NAS Kodiak, Alaska, from NAAS Camp Kearny, California, in March 1946, where he relieved Commander A. L. Burgess, USN, as Commanding Officer of VPB-122..." I was the squadron photographer (PH2) and went up with some of the crews to take photos of shipping, ice conditions, topography of Iceland, whale killing, etc. I took crew photos of all the men in front of their P2Vs. I flew mainly with Lt. Hardenburg and his crew on photo hops. I remember him as a great pilot and wonderful officer; his crew was a great bunch of guys, too. I wish I could talk to them again. VP-7 ended up in NAS Brunswick, Maine in December 1956..." [30MAY2000]
