GRAHAM, CAPTAIN Genie K. (Gene) Retired gene.graham@mchsi.com "...My first tour of duty after flight training was VW-11 (1960 to 1962), all on Crew 3. Started flying at NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada but moved to NAS Keflavik, Iceland in 1961. Flew first operational flight out of NAS Keflavik, Iceland on July 1, 1961. Next came a tour with the "Flying Phantoms", VP-18 (1963 to 1965), Crew 3, 12, 5 and 9 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida and NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. After two years in Monterey, reported to VP-31 Det NORIS as Safety Officer (1967 to 1969). My tour in purgatory came on USS, Independence from 1969 to 1971 as Assistantt CIC and then CIC after boss was fired. On to the "Pelicans", VP-45, as ADMIN and OPS Officer (1972 to 1975) Crew 21. Finally made it into the P-3 community, brand new P-3C's by the way. A new airplane smells just like a new car. One year in DC at George Washington University for my MBA and back to NAS Jacksonville, Florida as XO of VP-30 (1976 to 1977). Next stop with "World Famous Batmen", VP-24 as XO/CO (1977 to 1979). After four years on OPNAV and SECNAV staff, retired as Captain in 1983. Payback is HELL, my son was NROTC and stayed in Navy for 9 years. Seems that everywhere he was stationed, someone was waiting with a "Genie K story". Not all of those would I have chosen to share with my son! Happily, I can say, he was not tainted. Second career was with EDS and I enjoyed it very much. Jerry Lynn, bless her heart, has stayed with me for 44 years and counting, and we have retired to Fairhope, AL. Stay in touch!..." [08APR2004]

Fact is I should have been on BA-1 that crashed into Yaku Shima Island on June 9, l954 killing all on board. The plane was enroute to Hong Kong for a week of R&R. The reason I wasn't on it is that I didn't have enough money for a week of R&R so I backed out at the last minute. I was on the first PBM (84775) that found the wreckage. If it had been 200 feet to the right or left or higher it would have missed this Island. Sad day for all. Would be great to hear from any old Shipmates..." [04FEB2000]

We had the highest OSE of any crew in the squadron and didn't have anyone over the rank of LT (many LCDR's hated us). I'm doing the civilian thing now, but every so often, I smell the JP-5, and really start missing those days. There is nothing like the close-knit group of a CAC. Recently, we had a airshow nearby, and on the way, my wife asked me if I thought a P-3 would be there, and I shrugged and said that I doubted it. Well, there was a P-3 there, and to top it off, it was one from VP-46! My wife said I was like a kid at Christmas. It was on static, and of course, I couldn't wait to tour it. It still smells the same. I would love to hear from any of my old Shipmates - especially Paul Klasing, Dan MacPherson and Tim Hauck..." {E-Mail Updated 14NOV2009 | 12NOV96]

While serving with VP-931 and deployed to NAS Kodiak, Alaska we were the first squadron to overfly Soviet territory in performing surveillance operations during initial phase of Cold War (Korean War - 1951). Our flights included a few over Siberia and Kamchatka as well as the Arctic Circle. Most overflights were performed in the great P2V-3W aircraft. On one of my "go-silent no electronics" flights (P2V-2 BUNO: 39363) we became lost in bad weather and nearly overflew a MIG base. Another scary flight was over the Arctic Circle while performing countermeasure surveillance ops when both engines quit. I thought that I was going to be tossed out the nose turret. Our engine malfunction was due to carb ice and our pilot neglected to switch to "alternate" air when temp reached -70 F. Would like to hear from former Shipmates..." I often think of the night we received orders at NS Roosevelt Roads, PR, to strafe Cuban guarillas in the mountains of Cuba who were rebelling against the Dictator Batiste. I personally believed the guarillas were in the right, but it was going to be my job to do the straffing, as I was the best gunner in the squadron at the time. I spent a sleepless night soul searching, and decided to myself that I would shoot a lot, but not hit anyone on the ground. I realize now that I would have done my duty as ordered, if for no other reason than to protect my crew. Fortunately, as we were boarding the plane at three A.M. we received last minute cancellation of orders, and I was spared that horrible duty of machine gunning the people I personally supported in my heart. I do not remember the names of the PPC (Operations Officer, I believe), Co-Pilot, or Navigator, but I do remember several other crew members, Izzo, GALLO, Giovannato (all last names). Izzo was an AM and Gallo and Giovannato were AT along with myself and First Technician, Bill Meyers (?). Two shipmates in VP-45 whose memories are fond were Chcuk Butler (from Tennessee, I believe), and Bill Berg, a brilliant AT. I would be thrilled to hear from any of these shipmates or others from VP-45/FAW-ll that served during the 1954 - 1956 time frame. During those years VP-45 was equipped with P5M Martin Marlins. I remember VP-45 flying observation over Costa Rica and Nicarauga as designated by OAS, I believe. This would have most likely been in 1954. I loved the P5M and I enjoyed flying for the most part. After WWII continued to fly in the Reserves at NAS Anacostia, Washington, D.C.. Additionally, I was appointed to the National Research Council, Underwater Physiology Committee. I met a Navy Flight Surgeon (Dr. Ebbe Curtis Hoff) and we became good friends. He had an Office Naval Research Contract to write a book on Compressed Air, Diving and Submarine Medicine. The Navy sent me to New London Conn, for submarine "familiarization" and then to the Navy Dive School, Washington, DC. I became certified in mixed gas diving. I then went to the Caribbean to swim with the UDTs. Following that I worked with Dr. Hoff to prepare and write the texts. I had an office at the Office of Naval Research, Washington, DC. When the texts were completed the Navy sent me to the University of Maryland School of Medicine to get my Doctorate in Physiology. While a student I also worked on the third volume of the Sourcebook of Compressed Air, Diving and Submarine Medicine that was published by the Navy. That work in essence terminated my Navy affiliation. Because of research background in the physiology/pathology of embolism, I took a position at the National Institutes of Health working on stroke. I spent part of my time in the Navy lab, Bethesda and the rest managing a stroke research program for the National Institutes of Health. GRIFFING, CAPTAIN Charles W. molndol@earthlink.net c/o Steve Griffing sgriffing1@yahoo.com "...In his 29 years of service Dad flew 32 different Navy planes. As an instructor in WWII he soloed over 80 cadets. He also flew hundreds of hours of ASW patrol during the war. After the war, the Navy sent him to grad school at Cal Tech, from whence he began his career in research and testing. As a test pilot, he flew a broad range of aircraft (some experimental) from the early jet age, (one of the most fascinating periods to me). He also conducted the first successful test of a Sparrow missile from his F7-U Cutlass over the Point Mugu test range in 1954. By that time, he out-ranked, out flew, and was more educated than any of the seven original astronauts. If he had been a few months younger he probably would have been the first American in space. Very few aviators who flew Stearman trainers and seaplanes, also flew supersonic jets and twin-engine bombers like the JM. As a kid, I also had the privilege of flying "shotgun" with him on numerous civilian flights, including power-off landings for qualifications, etc. Yet, he always speaks of the JM as one of his favorites, as you can see in his article. Later, Dad worked for the Bureau of Aeronautics, the Chief of Naval Operations, the Office of Naval Research, and finally CO of the Navy Space Systems Activity in El Segundo, CA. 1966-1968. He maintained his proficiency continuously until retirement. (I don't believe he was ever passed over for promotion.) You can tell he's my hero, even at 85. But of course there are thousands from every generation who have served superbly, and I'm one baby-boomer, UC Berkeley graduate who is grateful for their legacy of valor...." [16JUN2005]

GROVE, AFCM Don Retired fogydong@gmail.com "...I was with VP-23 at NAS Brunswick, Maine, as a young AMAN and AM3 in 1952, 53, and 54. Worked in the Airframes Division. The squadron was equipped with PB4Y-2 Privateers (the Navy version of the B-24) when I arrived. Just a few months before I checked-in the squadron had been transferred to NAS Brunswick, Maine from Opalaka (Miami), Florida, where they had been the Navy's hurricane hunters. VP-23 returned from their second consecutive deployment to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, in November of 1953 and began transitioning to P2V-5's. We were one of the very few squadron's to receive brand-new P2V-5's from the Lockheed factory at Burbank, California, without the jet engines installed under the wings. In the fall of 1954 VP-23 deployed to NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco, with these "twin-engined" P2V-5's. After that deployment the jet-less Neptunes were returned to the Lockheed factory to have the jet engine modification installed. By then, I had already departed for duty at NATTU, Pensacola. In July of 1968, after a four-year tour of recruiting duty, I reported to VP-2 at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington as an AMCS. I served mostly as Aircraft Division Chief, and for a short time as Operations Department Chief. The squadron was flying the P2V-7, or as it had been re-titled by decree of Congress, the SP2H. In February 1969 VP-2deployed to NS Sangley Point, Philippines, with a permanent detachment at NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. The size of our Vietnam detachment varied from 3 to 6 planes depending on enemy activity and the dark-of-the-moon. The squadron was also sporadically tasked with maintaining a small detachment, usually 2 aircraft, in Tainan, Taiwan. During this deployment plans were laid and necessary technical school quotas obtained to support a transition to P-3 Orions. This transition was scheduled to begin after VP-2's return to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. Alas, it was not to be. Another NAS Whidbey Island, Washington P2V squadron, VP-42, had been scheduled as our relief squadron at the completion of deployment. But, VP-42 was not sent to WestPac. VP-2 left the Philippines for home without a turn-over squadron, arriving at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington during the latter part of August 1969. It was soon determined, by those that decide such matters, that the last two active-duty Navy P2V squadrons on the west coast, VP-2 and VP-42 would be disestablished. There was to be no transition to P-3's for VP-2. The squadron was officially deactivated on 30 September 1969. I was transferred across the hanger to VP-1, a squadron then in the middle of a transition to P-3B Orions. Other squadrons that I was a part of were VAH-3 (sea duty), VAH-3 (shore duty), VAH-13, all A3D squadrons, and VQ-3 (EC-130Q's), VC-5(A-4's & US2F's), VFP-63 (RF-8K's), and NATTU (SNB-5P's & F9F-6P's)...."
