Memorial Picture "...CLEVELAND, LCDR Alfred Saxton...My name is Casey Cleveland. My father was LCDR Alfred Saxton Cleveland. He was the Air Combat Intelligence Officer of VP-54. I believe he served until the end of 1944. He was on the USS Intrepid In Nov. of 44 during a nasty Kamakazae attack. I never knew why he was there, I assumed the VP-54 was somehow deployed from her at one time. He was given the Bronz Star for assisting in the rescue of trapped men from the ready room. he passed away in 1982 before I was able to learn more about his navy career. I am looking for anyone who might have known him during this time or served with him. I have visited this site before and found mission documents with his name on the bottom. Clark attended Avionics "A" school and the Advanced First Term Avionics Course in Millington, Tennessee where he was advanced to Petty Officer Third Class. In December 1981 he proceeded to NAS Pensacola, Florida where he completed the Naval Aircrewman Candidate School at the top of his class. In February 1982 he completed SERE school in San Diego, California and proceeded to the Fleet Replacement Squadron at NAS Moffett Field, California to attend the P-3C Integrated Avionics Maintenance/In-Flight Technician Course at VP-31's "Black Lightning Camp". His first operational squadron was VP-40. While assigned to the "Fighting Marlins", he was designated a Naval Aircrewman and primary IFT NATOPS instructor. He deployed to NAS Adak, Alaska, NAS Keflavik, Iceland and NAS Misawa, Japan where he participated in the KAL-007 Search and Rescue/Salvage Operations. He was advanced to Petty Officer Second Class. In October 1985, it was back to VP-31 for a challenging assignment as an IFT/DACM instructor. During this tour he trained over 80 IFT students, and 35 Maritime Patrol Aircrews in Defensive Air Combat Maneuvers. He was also the CNAP P-3C IFT Evaluator and was designated an Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist. He was advanced to Petty Officer First Class. Senior Chief Clark's next sea duty assignment was with VP-19. While in "Big Red", he was the command DAPA and was twice selected as Aircrewman of the Year. He deployed to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan, NSF Diego Garcia, The Philippines, and Misira Oman where he participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. After VP-19 disestablished in May of 1991, he moved to BUPERS Sea Duty Component, Dallas, Texas where he served as the Quality Assurance Officer and Training Officer. Shortly after his arrival, he was selected for advancement to Chief Petty Officer. In October of 1994 he transferred to the Naval Air Warfare Center at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, where he was the Contract Field Team Project Officer at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, and the senior Research, Development, Test and Evaluation QAR at VX-20. He reported to VP-26 in October 1997 and deployed to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR, NAS Keflavik, Iceland and NAS Sigonella, Sicily where he flew combat missions over Bosnia. During his tour with "Team Trident", he was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer and served as the AV/ARM Division CPO and Command Master Chief. In October 2000, Senior Chief Clark transferred to VX-20 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland where he now serves as the Command Senior Chief. Upon graduation, Bill was assigned to USS T.LOUIS (CL-49), reporting aboard in July, 1940. After serving for two years, he reported to NAS Lakehurst, N.J., where he underwent lighter-than-air flight training. Upon completion of this training, Bill served in various Airship Patrol Squadrons until May of 1944, when he reported to NAS Dallas, Texas for heavier-than-air flight training. Bill completed HTA training and was attached to Patrol Bombing Squadron One Hundred at NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, when the war ended. In September, 1945, Bill assumed command of Patrol Bombing Squadron Twenty-Eight, based in the Philippine Islands. In July, 1947, he reported to Commander, Naval Air Materiel Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as Aide to Com NAMC. Commencing in January, 1949, Bill served as the Commanding Officer, Naval Air Station, Santa Ana, California, until the base was disestablished in July of that year. His next tour of duty was as Operations Officer of USS CURTIS (AV-4). In July, 1951, Bill was transferred to the Office of Naval Intelligence, where he served until June, 1953. His next tour of duty was on the staff of Commander Task Group 7.3, engaged in atomic testing at Eniwetok and Bikini in the Pacific test areas. From 1954 to 1956, Bill served in USS BENNINGTON (CVA-20), as navigator. In June, 1956, he was assigned as Commanding Officer of Airship Patrol Squadron One. From August, 1957 to June, 1958, Bill was the Executive Officer of NAAS Cabaniss Field, Corpus Christi, Texas. This was followed by three years on duty with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Aviation Plans Division. In August, 1961, Bill reported to Com Nav Marianas as Commanding Officer of the NAS Agana, Guam. After two wonderful years in Guam, he returned to Washington, D.C. for duty on the Joint Staff, Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for three years. Then, after a two-year stint as Naval Plant Representative, Sikorsky Aircraft, Stratford, Connecticut, Bill retired on 1 November 1968. Bill was married to Eleanor Stone in 1942, and they had four wonderful children. Upon retirement, they settled on the mid-coast of Maine in the small town of Newcastle. For the next few years, Bill tried his hand at several small commercial enterprises, none of which were very successful. When he finally decided, in 1975, to settle down and enjoy retirement, Bill's wife was stricken with cancer. She died in April of 1977.

I was privileged to have "worked" all of the 4 Mars aircraft when they would return to the US from the NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. On several occasions, I have witnessed the aircraft complete its trip on only 2 of the four engines and one of the two working ones was smoking. Very exciting (for me, but not for those on board, I'm sure)! As an ACAN then, instead of us being assigned as mess cooks or compartment cleaners, our "extra duty" assignment was to the NAS boathouse, where we manned the crash boats and swept the sealanes for floating debris or, at night, lighting the sealane lights, prior to a Mars arrival. He was trying to make NAS Anacostia, Washington, D.C. but ran low on fuel and had to land at Columbus. All the brass were waiting at Anacostia. After about 3 hours THE TRUCULENT finally showed up. Three people on board pilot co-pilot and a chief recieved the air medal. I went on board and they had rubber gas tanks all over the place. Fairing on engine nacelles spaces were covered with ordinace tape to cut down drag. It was an experience I'll never forget. I never was in a heavier than air VP but did spend 6 years in ZP squadrons ZP-1 and ZP-4 NAS Weeksville, NC. Smooth Sailing..." [09APR99]

I do UNPAID work as an emcee for the Darrington, WA Bluegrass Festival and have done emcee work at the Wintergrass Festival in Tacoma.
