TWARDY, Edward S. etwardy@earthlink.net "...Enlisted in 1957 on "kiddy cruise" and enjoyed bootcamp at Bainbridge, MD - Company 132. TAD to NAS Glynco, Georgia in late '57 then, in '58 to AE "A" school in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Served in VT-2 (1958-61) working on T28-C's and then transferred to VP Navy for 1st sea duty - VP-30 in late 61 and joined VP-7 in NAS Sigonella, Sicily on '62 deployment there. Flew with Crew 10 and then Crew 1 overseas and worked the AE shop when stateside. Enjoyed NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during blockade - I took a lot of pictures of Iron Curtain freighters during that little exercise while hanging in the afterstation of old LB 10 (BuNo 131431). Shipped to "B" school in '66 and then to NAS Norfolk, Virginia for shore duty until transfer to VRC-40. Stayed there with a good bunch of guys (lots of Roosy deployments) until '73, then NADC (Warminister) Johnsville, Pennsylvania until transfer to Fleet Reserve in June '76. Earned MA and Ph.D from University of Virginia and spent from '79 - 03 as college professor and dean at Universities of Nebraska, Virgina and Vermont. Retired from academia in '03 and now serve as founder and president of a small research company working for the DoD. I still keep in touch with several Shipmates significant in my life...but think often about many others with whom I've lost touch. I'd like to hear from the guys with whom I worked - especially on the line at South Whiting Field, VP-7, VRC-40 and NADC (Warminister) Johnsville, Pennsylvania. Best wishes to my old pals..." ALL OF US HAD SPENT SEVERAL WEEKS AT THE FAMOUS RECEIVING STATION AT THE OTHER END OF THE ISLAND WHERE YOU HANGED UP YOUR STRIPES AND MADE LIKE A MESS COOK. OUR DUTY WATCH WAS IN THE JUNGLE AIR STRIPS WHERE WE STOOD WATCH WITH A BROWNING 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN TO PREVENT NATIVES AND POSSIBLE JAPANESE FROM STEALING PARTS FROM OUR BOMBERS. ONE INTERESTING BIT OF HISTORY WAS WHEN WE NEEDED PARTS FOR OUR PLANES, ALL WE DID WAS LOOK FOR THE NEEDEWD PART IN THE PARTS CATALOG (JUST LIKE ORDERING PARTS FROM A SEARS CATALOG). ALL SQUADRON GROUND PERSONNEL BOARDED THE USS SUISON BAY, A CONVERTED DESTROYER AND SET SAIL FOR PEARL. WE ARRIVED IN EARLY 1948 AND WERE IN HANGAR 5. I STARTED FLYING AS A PORT WAIST GUNNER IN "BD4" AND SEVERAL OTHERS INCLUDING BD8. JULY 1948 WE PARTICIPATED IN HELPING SINK THE OLD USS NEW YORK AND LATER THE USS NEVADA. I JOINED VPHL-8 AS AN AEM SIC AND IN APRIL 1948 I TOOK MY TEST OUT OF THE OLD PETTY OFFICERS MANUAL FOR 3RD CLASS AND SOON I WAS STRUTTING AROUND WITH MY NEW CROW. I WORKED WITH SOME FINE FRIENDS WHO I MET ON NAS Agana, Guam AND NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii INCLUDING CHIEF EDWARDS ARMC YOUNT AEM2, R. SCHMIDT AEM3, PHILLIPS AEM SIC, THE TINNEY BROTHERS AMMC. I LEFT VP-28 ON SEPT 1948 TO VOLUNTEER MY SERVICES TO VR-44 AT NAS Moffett Field, California IN THE BERLIN AIR LIFT..." [24DEC98]

SIMMONS, AFCM(AW) Carl Jr. navycarl@comcast.net "...I reported aboard VP-18 in December of 1963 right out of "A" School. In January 1964 I volunteered to fly as a crewmember aboard the P2V-7 and was assigned to LG3 as second mechanic. In the summer of 1964 we transferred from NAS Jacksonville, Florida to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. At NS Roosevelt Roads, PR I participated in the Dominican Republic Crisis, one NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba Detachment and two Unitas Detachments. In March of 1967 my tour was over and I separated from active duty. I stayed as a drilling reservist at NAS New Orleans, Louisiana from 1967 to 1971. In 1971 I affiliated with VP-94 NAS New Orleans, Louisiana as an In-flight Plane Captain. In 1972 to 1973 we decommissioned the last P2V-7's and commissioned the first P-3A's. With VP-94 I made three NS Rota, Spain deployments and was unfortunate enough to be involved in the last accident on the P2V. I was on the jumpseat during take off on a detachment to NS Rota, Spain when the 2P pulled up the Landing Gear Handle during the takeoff roll. We ended up nose landing on the runway. Fortunately we all walked away unharmed except for a minor arm injury. In July of 1976 I rejoined the Navy as a TAR and eventually retired in the VR Program serving as Flight Engineer, NATOPS Instructor, and Wing Evaluator on the C-118 with VR-52, NAS Glenview, Illinois and CFLSW. In VR-62 NAF Detroit, Michigan I served as Maintenance and Leading Chief, in VR-54, VR-48, VR-53 and VR-46. I retired in November of 1999 as the Command Master Chief of VR-46 NAS Atlanta, Georgia. My military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (1 award), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards), Good Conduct Medal (7 awards), National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Expeditionary Medal and the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal. I am presently Department Chair of the Avionics/Aviation Department at Atlanta Technical College. I make my home in Dallas, Georgia with my wife Catherine, Granddaughter Brittany, Chelsea our Cocker and Gracie our Cat. I will never forget the good times, great friends and life long Shipmates in VP-18..."
