DILLARD, Ken kdillard@cox.net "...I served with VP-776 (1958-09/1961) at NAS Los Alamitos, California per my request because I knew Joe Taperro who was a 1st Class Airframe Mechanic and Air Crewman. I was a weekend warrior for 3 years in this squadron as an Airman -ATR striker. I went on active duty (09/1961) with VS-771 a S2F squadron which had been activated for the Cuban Crisis and stayed at NAS Los Alamitos, California for the 1st year of my 2 year active duty. I still can remember going up in the P2V Neptune for the 1st time and being ask to be the "forward observer" and crawling down the access tunnel and coming out to sit in that chair which gave you the feeling that you were suspended out in front of the aircraft and having the feeling that I was just about to fall to my death. We were flying at around 9,000 feet over Catalina Island and remember seeing how beautiful it was from the air..." [14MAR2013]
