Memorial Picture "...BENNETT, CAPTAIN Art...This message is to inform friends and squadron mates of the death of CAPT Art Bennett, USN (Ret.). Captain Bennett served with VP-49 (late ‘50s early 60's) and VP-4 (early 60's). Don Richardson, a USNA classmate of Art's, is sending the information to the USNA group. I would be grateful to any recipients for passing this information on to others who are not email users and for informing others who served with Art in VP-42 or other commands not noted above. I was informed in a phone call from his only remaining child, Lynn Bennett-Campbell, who works for the World Bank and is living in Katmandu, Nepal, of Art's death in the early hours of Wednesday, December 8, following hospitalization on December 7 relating to an accidental fall while putting up pictures in his condo in Marquette, Michigan. The preliminary death notice in The Mining Journal in Marquette http://www.miningjournal.net/obit/story/128202004_obt02-o1208.asp reads: Arthur Bennett, Jr. - MARQUETTE Arthur Bennett Jr., 83, of 205 Lakeshore Blvd., and Conway Lake, passed away early this morning at Marquette General Hospital. Services will be held at a later date. The Swanson- Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The funeral home handling arrangements has a website at http://www.swanson-lundquist.com/. The schedule and obituary (when posted) can be viewed at: http://www.swanson-lundquist.com/ASIMAS/swanson/service.jsp?domain_id=140. A guest book where you can leave messages for Art's daughter Lynn and his companion of several years, Marion Sonderegger is at: http://www.swanson-lundquist.com/ASIMAS/swanson/guestbook.jsp?domain_id=140&deceased_id=34051. Marion Sonderegger's address is: 7 Middle Island Point, Marquette, MI. 49855. As I understand it, following a memorial service in Marquette that is yet to be announced, Art will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) with his son, King who died years ago in an aircraft carrier accident. Because of the waiting period for military funerals at ANC, I'm told that the burial service could take a month or longer. I will post to this list again with any further information I have on the subject. Regards, Rick Barry...John Larson johnlar1@cox.net..." [14DEC2004]

In NAS Keflavik, Iceland in 1941 with the Geo B. Badger for the trip and with VP-55 at that time to December 1941. Came back in l942 with VP-84 in NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada and NAS Keflavik, Iceland. VP-84 was the top submarine sinking squadron in WW2 and I was with Lt Milliard when we got the first submarine. He went on to get a second one and is now deceased. I entered as a RM3 with my first promotion and then they started aviation rates and I became a ARM2 and eventually a chief radio tech and later AVCM as maintenance chief and leading chief in VP-49 in NAS Bermuda. Some of us in VP-84 have met, had one Reunion in Pensacola. While in NAS Keflavik, Iceland, a german submarine was captured, the crew was turned over to a Norwegian group and I believe they were killed. The capture was by a navy plane and assisted by a navy ship with the submarine being brought into Iceland. A book listing all the sub activity by VP-84 has been written and all the sub kills are listed therein. I would like to hear from anyone and especially anyone who remembers the capture of the sub in the fall of l941...The truth is that the sub was captured by the English and brought to the south shore of Iceland where they worked on it. The crew was interred as POW and all but one of these was turned over to Germans at the end of the war. The one man tried to escape and was killed. The story went on to say the name was changed and it became a British submarine, BUT, I had seen the sub and it was brought into fjord near Reyjkavik and apparently this was not a known partof the situation. Also, we found that two US planes were on the scene when it was captured but it was noted that the British were the oneswho captured it... Thanks for such a great job you have done..." FLOW, ADCS Ed Retired vinnfizz@aol.com "...Hi there to all of my fellow VP'ers. This site has really been a trip down memory lane and a name dropping episode. I served with VP-22 (73-76) as my first command as a 2nd Mech on Crew 11, a member of "Platt's Rats" for the infamous Hobie Cat raid on Diego Grcia and then went on to VP-31, where I graduated to full F.E. status and then went to the "Golden Eagles" of VP-9 (77-79). Has anyone heard anything out of AD1 Jim Crow lately? It was there that I had the unfortunate episode of ditching PD-2 in the bearing Sea flying out of NAS Adak, Alaska in Oct 78. From there I went to the Naval Research Laboratory Flight Support Detachment. Following a per diem laden tour there I transfered to the "World Famous Woodpeckers" of VP-49 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. The school house at VP-30 captured me from 85-89 and then I did the "Batmen" of VP-24 as my last flying tour. I transfered from there back to VP-30 as the QA Supervisor during the transition/consolidation with VP-31 and moved into Maintenance Control before leaving to join the "Black Raven's " of VQ-6 and going to the boat for my first time in 24 years. I just retired after 26.5 years active and my VP days will always be the highlight of my career...It has brought back many memories and names that I had forgotten over the years. GULLIVER, Victor S. c/o his daughter Anne Gulliver gulliver@wwa.com "...Joined VP-2 in September 1959, just weeks before we deployed for the usual six month deployment to NAS Kodiak, Alaska/ NAS Adak, Alaska. The PPC of my first crew was LT George Silberstein, who was given the task of training two PP3P's to be co-pilot: Don Hindorf and Bill Sterton were both Connie pilots who'd transferred to VP-2 on split tour only a few months before I arrived. I was a "PPnoP," with no hope of moving up during the winter deployment because we didn't conduct any training fights in the Alaskan winter. George Silberstein was a great PPC. He shared the seat time equally with all of us, and he trained us to the very best of his ability. The most common complaint among my nugget contemporaries was probably that their PPC's wouldn't give them enough pilot time. They spent way too much time chained to the navigation table. I followed George's lead in training the young pilots under me in the years that followed George's departure. Several years after Bill Sterton left the squadron, he was killed landing a C-2 on an aircraft carrier as a member of the ship's company. In my second six mouth deployment to Alaska, I flew with LCDR Paul Tripp, and LT Dick Seng. On my third deployment to Alaska, I had my own crew and we had LCDR Don Florin, LTJG Dave Bowen, and ENS Jerry Russell, one of the first NFO's in the squadron.. Also on my last crew were AD2 Ric Dombrowski, ADJ3 Floyd Palmer and ATN2 Dick Whipple, all of whom attended the 1996 reunion. I left VP-2 in May 1963, but stayed in the Navy for a thirty year career. I was a member of the finest airframes workcenter from August 1985 to January 1989. (Thanks AMSC Marage for teaching me how an airframes workcenter should be ran). From there the tailhook Navy got me and have been there ever since. My first "hook" experience was with VFA-137 at old NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida from May 1989 to December 1992. Made deployments on USS Coral Sea and USS Forrestal. (yep I missed the P-3) From there I left aviation and went to the surface/Gator Navy at ACU-4 at NAB Little Creek. Working with the LCAC and the surface mentality was different but I did meet and work with some fine people. February 1996 I cheked into VAW-125 where I picked up Chief. ( I have more than one person to thank for that. To the "kids" that worked for me in the line shack - THANKS AGAIN.) I made deployments on USS Enterprise and USS Eisenhower. I am now on the staff at COMAEWWINGLANT in Norfolk. I'll have 21 when this is over but I'm still having fun and my wife and kids still support me. I see another sea tour on the horizon. WE flew in rotation with VP-45 between NAS Bermuda, and NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Cuban Blockaid, from fall 1962 to August 1963. In that year the squadron Logo, was changed from flying whale to "No Sanc.in the Deep." A 2nd class by the Name of Caldwell, designed it and painted on the Bda hanger. I have a leather tooled briefcase he maded for me. My Plane LP-8 5542, was the last plane flown into NAS Norfolk, Virginia August 28, 1963. I was last one off, and said my Goodbyes, and took our Pinup girl from under Navigation Table. As we worked with these planes, we called them; 2-boat or 8-boat ect. If sick of them we called them Pig Boats. I remember many flights during our early space shots. We then transported to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to catch up with the rest of the men and new ones from P-3A school. I went back to the shop, and setup the squadron Corrosion Control Program for our A/C. I recall placing alot of Lighting Bolts and decals of our new Logo on the nose of our dark sea plane gray P-3As. The first deployment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, March of 1965, a base truck hit the wing of our new plane. It was down the whole time as we repaired it. I figured God forgot that area of the world after being in NAS Bermuda. We where restricted to base because of the Red Bear was our enemy. Im looking for any old flight buddies of LP-8 that may recall me. I was Nicked name "Hector". If you are one of the following crew nicknames check in. Moose, Big John, Burt, Mike, Carp, Burp Bag Folyd, Mr. Jacobs Plane Commander, Mr. Higginbothm Ens., and Warren Navigator. Good Luck to you all where ever you are. Memorial Picture "...ROBERTSON, James...James Robertson didn't cotton to life in a submarine. Too claustrophobic, he said. He joined the Navy and learned to fly instead. He trained in Pensacola and spent four years in the military during the Korean War. He was assigned to the VP-49 patrol squadron, stationed in NAS Bermuda. He patrolled the waters in search of enemy submarines. He got the "tough assignment," joked a son, James Douglas Robertson of Snellville. "He flew a big twin-engine seaplane." "The seaplanes would come back from maneuvers and we could see them landing from the house," said Irene Robertson, his wife of 55 years. "They would taxi around the base and, when they landed, the wives would go pick up their husbands." After the military, Mr. Robertson sought employment with a major airline. Pan Am and Eastern wouldn't give him a shot, but he found a job he wanted. In 1956, he joined Delta. After training in Atlanta, the pilot flew out of hubs in New Jersey and Miami before he returned to the city in 1961. In 1986, he retired after a 30-year career. "He just loved it because he felt he was closer to God up there with the remarkable sunsets and all the beauty he would see," his wife said. "He missed that when he retired." In October, James Frederick Robertson was diagnosed with liver cancer. He died March 8 from complications of the disease at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper. He was 78. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Roper Funeral Home in Jasper. Mr. Robertson was born in Orange, N.J., but grew up in the Jersey town of Westfield. He attended Brown University for three years, where he was in the Navy Reserves. He'd received notice that at some point he would have to join his squadron on a submarine in Japan. He elected to become a naval aviation cadet instead. Mr. Robertson never regretted not completing college. "He felt his education was with the military and Delta," his wife said. "He said that's what they gave him. He had never thought much about flying before the military. He was very satisfied with the time he spent in service." In 1986, Mr. Robertson retired to provide opportunity at Delta for his pilot son, James. In the 1980s, the company had a nepotism policy that prevented the hiring of the younger Robertson. "He was at the top of his career, in his mid-50s, but he sacrificially laid it all down and allowed me to be interviewed," said his son, who spent 22 years with Delta. "Fortunately, I was hired. I was thankful to him in that he was willing to sacrifice his last five years and everything else for me." The Robertsons lived in Sandy Spring for 35 years before they settled in Bent Tree, a retirement community in Jasper. Before his health prevented it, Mr. Robertson enjoyed golf. . He combined his love for reading and the stock market by reading investment materials. "The ticker tape was always on," his wife said. "He was content with that." Additional survivors include two daughters, Diane Robertson Little of Fairmount and Dawn Robertson Hartert of Marietta; another son, William Scott Robertson of Forest Park; a sister, Joyce Lowell of Albuquerque, N.M., and five grandchildren..." I was assigned to the crew of the first P5M, which had no radar installed, and so became one of the first AM's to be a PBM crewmember when we reverted to the old PBM 8-Boat while the radar was installed at the Martin plant in Baltimore. The metal shop was run by Chief "Shakey" Gimbert and "Red Eye" Morrison was transferred to VF-14 with me...I was in VP-49 during operation MAINBRACE in about 1952. We crossed the Atlantic in about ten days aboard the (AV-7) USS Currituck. I remember that there had been a mix-up about films and we ended up with only one, "The Thing" starring James Arness, which we watched every night in the hanger deck until everybody knew every word. The trip up the fijord to Trondhiem was spectacular with the vertical mountain walls about fifty feet away from each side of the ship. Squadron personnel bunked in a hole called "Hobby Lobby" deep into the bowels of the ship. It was right below the deck which the extra duty brigade chipped and repainted every night. Last winter I was in Florida and saw a picture of a seaplane tender of the (AV-7) USS Currituck Class hanging in a dive shop. It was to be sunk as an artificial reef. STOKES, AT2 Robert "Francis" dropkickem@yahoo.com "...After I finished my 1st tour in A-7s I went to VP-49. I was there from early '92 to the decom. I really do miss flying at 200ft shooting buoys, especially with those new TACCOs. It just wasn't a good day if you could see the galley thru the smoke. We were a "kickem when they're down" squadron. Unforunatly timetables and politics snuffed us out. I'm at the VQ side of the P-3 now. I just completed a 5 1/2 year tour with VQ-2 over in sunny NS Rota, Spain. I went there right after we got our squadron (VP-49) decommissioned out from underneath us. You gotta love it!!! I do miss Spain alot, but it's good to be back over here in the "New World". It's nice having right-turn-on-red, screens in your windows, central heat, Taco Bell, Walmart, ETC!!!!! I'm up in NAS Whidbey Island, Washington now instructing aircrew nuggets at FASO. It's fun teaching some of them that there is more to the job then just looking cool in your flight suit and your Raybands while you're putting the plugs and covers on the warbird. Well anyway, I just wanted to say "HEY YALL!"..." [E-Mail/BIO Updated 24MAY2000 | 10OCT978]

Memorial Picture "...STONECIPHER, CAPTAIN E. Thomas...Shipmate Pix (CO VP-56 - Circa 1950)...I regret to inform his old squadron mates of the passing of my father, CAPTAIN E. Thomas Stonecipher Retired, 83, on December 3, 2003, in San Antonio, TX. Dad entered the Navy in 1940 and was commissioned in March 1941. He served as a black shoe officer aboard the USS Altair in the Pacific and Caribbean, attended flight school in 1943 at NAS Dallas, Texas and NAS Pensacola, Florida, and served the rest of the war flying PBM Mariners with VP-215 and VP-204 in the Caribbean and Atlantic. Post-war he served with the Atlantic fleet aviation training unit, with VP-49, and was Commanding Officer of VP-56 in 1955 when it earned the Navy "E." In those later years he was flying P5M Marlins. For most of the rest of his naval career he was in the nuclear weapons program in landlocked New Mexico and Germany, so had to grab what flight time he could get with the Air Force or Army -- and he always marveled at how comparatively easy land planes were to fly and operate! After retiring from the Navy in 1965, he went on to a great second career in youth training programs, but always looked back with profound satisfaction to his years with the patrol squadron Navy. A final farewell and "bravo zulu" to all VP'ers from Tom Stonecipher...Charles Stonecipher stonecipherca@yahoo.com [PIX Added 16JAN2004 | 23DEC2003]

Presently with Lockheed Martin and probably have the distinction of being the last VP'er to have been part of the team to build the last new P-3C Update III aircraft. I was Engineering Program Manager for the Korean Navy P-3C. We delivered the last P-3C to the Korean Navy in January 1996. Had many good experiences in VP-49 from 1970-72. Serving with John McCollester, the squadron first deployed the P-3C to NAS Keflavik, Iceland in 1970. We were quite successfull tracking the Evil Empire's nuclear submarines..." [07OCT98]

He was the one to see if you wanted to know when a flight was going to the States, hence the nickname "Slick". After our Navy days, Sonny, Slick and I met for lunch once a month and relived those wonderful NAS Bermuda days. One of my fondest photos is a composite that shows the three of us sitting outside on the balconey of the "Long Tail Club" in Hamilton (1951). WESTBROOK, Robert F. whetrock@bellsouth.net "...I was a graduate of NAO Class 1 at NAS Pensacola, Florida in 1959. Saw the seaplanes (P5M) landing on the bay and thought they were beautiful. Requested seaplanes when I completed training and served with VP-49 at NAS Bermuda 1961 -1963 as Navigator/Tactical Coordinator on Woodpecker 6. We participated in the Mercury space flights and the Cuban blockade. We rotated a 6 plane detachment out of NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Served briefly with the USS Lake Champlain at the end of the blockade. The P5M was a fun plane. VP-49 was a great squadron and I served with a fine group of men. I am trying to locate LT James R. Arnold who was the copilot on Woodpecker 6. Jim left the Navy in about 1965 and flew for United. The last time I heard from him he was living near Denver - I am trying to locate J. P. A Maldonado, a pilot who served during that same period. I would appreciate any information. John if you happen upon this site drop a line..." [E-Mail/BIO Updated 23MAY2005 | 09JUN99]

WOOD, AW2(AW) Pete pvwood@earthlink.net "...>What a long, strange trip it's been! And it all started as a young, impressionable airman with VP-49 in January of 1987. I spent four years with the Woodpeckers, to include three deployments to NAS Bermuda, NAS Sigonella, Sicily, and NAS Bermuda- NAS Keflavik, Iceland. I met some great friends along the way: George Metcalf, Bob Rymsa, Brian Cook, Casey Bennett, Pat Zeigler, Rob Hazelip, Jamie Sippel, Chuck Milhollen, Bryce Merrill, Rob Ochoa, Neil Smith, only to name a few. Unfortunately, I've lost contact with most of these folks. If any of you miscreants are out there or if you know how to get a hold of them, please let me know!...I received overseas orders to NOCC NS Rota, Spain in January 1991. I was there for about two and a half years when I was lucky enough to be selected for ECP. From there, I went home to Boulder, Colorado and completed my degree, earned my commission, and started flight school in July 1996. Now I'm an Electronic Countermeasures Officer (NFO) stationed up at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington with VAQ-131. We did a Westpac on board the USS Constellation last summer and flew many sorties in support of Operation Southern Watch. We set sail for the Connie's last cruise next March. Rumor has it that it's going to be a world cruise - that should be fun! I've got another two years left with the Lancers before I rotate to shore duty, which will be my twilight tour! Oh, by the way another good friend that I've lost contact with is AW2 Mark Oliver. The last place I knew he went was North Carolina for recruiting duty..." [18JUL2000]
