The docket is stored in the (offline) NTSB Imaging System. Accident occurred Saturday, June 27, 1998 at RESERVE, NM. Aircraft:Lockheed SP-2H, registration: N14835. Injuries: 2 Fatal. The airplane had made a dry pass on the fire zone, then circled around to make a second pass and release its load of 2,450 gallons of retardant. According to witnesses, the airplane struck trees while in a nose low, right wing low attitude. Upon ground impact, the airplane exploded and burned. Investigation revealed no evidence of preimpact airframe, engine, propeller, or flight control failure/malfunction. The first officer, an initial attack trainee pilot, was in the left seat and the captain was in the right seat. Toxicology tests of the first officer indicated 0.031 ug/ml brompheniramine, 0.011 ug/ml chlorpheniramine in kidney fluid, and 0.142 brompheniramine, 0.072 chlorpheniramine in liver fluid. Both medications are over-the-counter antihistamines with sedative effects. The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident/incident as follows. Failure of the copilot to maintain both lateral and vertical clearance from the trees, and failure of the captain to provide adequate supervision of the flight. UPDATE "...noticed that in the VP-23 area, you now have a picture of LJ-1 (my A/C --- later sold to the Norwegians) over the Americo Vespucci. As I type this in my office, there is a 3'x2' version hanging on the wall as well as one at home. When I retire-retire, I plan to give the office copy to the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. The caption is off slightly. The whole effort got started by RADM Roy Snyder after he departed Brunswick as WingsLant and became Commander First Naval District. He got in touch with the Commodore, Capt. Oak Kidd, and suggested the idea. Capt Kidd offered it out during one of our Commodore/ CO weekly meetings. The CO of VP-10 got his hand up first, but I suggested two A/C from different squadrons. The Commodore agreed and directed VP-10 and VP-23 to conduct the flight. I suggested to Ten's CO that it would be a good idea, in order to prevent any ill feelings if the pictures didn't turn out, to have each squadron photographer ride the other's A/C. This was agreed to. So, on 2 Aug 1976, LJ-1 flown by LCdr Brooks Chesser, my Operations Officer, at 43-40N and 64-00W appeared over Americo Vespucci (enroute home after the Tall Ships Celebration during the Bicentennial) and PH 1 R. W. Beno (of VP-23) in a VP-10 A/C captured the incredible picture. VP-10's photographer in LJ-1 did not have as much success. Half an hour after the picture, the wind diminished and the sails were taken in. RADM Snyder was on the ship. I'm told he later used the picture to have it etched onto a serving tray that he presented to the ship..." George R. Allender, Captain USN Ret. gallende@arinc.com

Every visitor to your site (and most familiar with VP) have seen the beautiful shot of LJ-1 overflying the Amerigo Vespucci in 1976.
