BARNETT, PO1 Jerry E. jerryebarnett@newwavecomm.net "...I first joined the Navy October 30, 1958. I served aboard NAF Annapolis, Maryland. I was there for about three years. The aircraft we had were UF-1 Albatross and N3N Yellowbird. The N3N was a biplane, open cockpit. You had to hand crank the engine. They used this plane to indoctrinate the midshipmen to flying. My next station was VP-18 NAS Jacksonville, Florida. I first went to NAS Norfolk, Virginia to ASW school then on to Jacksonville. By the time I got there I had about a year left in the Navy. I was on flight crew status during that time. During that year we spent allot of time in the Caribbean (NS Roosevelt Roads, PR). Most of my time was spent on Crew 7 and for some reason I remember the side number 147956. We had two bad incidents, one was when the varacam you know the middle section of the horizontal stabilizer on a P2V went in the full up position. We had a great pilot (LT Mehan or something like that) and he was able to keep the plane in control until the Plane Captain was able to manually bring it back to neutral. Another time when we were taking off from NS Roosevelt Roads, PR and the starboard engine caught fire (exciting time). Some of the crew members were a AT by the name of Gilkerson, Plane Cap Hendrex, ordnance last name was Prince. The Navigator name was LT Arvin and our co-pilot last name was Anderson. In the fall of 1962 I transfered to crew 12 that was assigned to go to South America on Unitas III. Three of the crew members were a AT last name Smith. There were two other AT's by the name of Walter Gearard and Rudy Boatright. We came back early because of the Cuban crises. I was extended in the Navy and was discharged in December 1962. The last month that I was in the Navy we spent a lot of time taking pictures of Russian Ships. I left the Navy as a Aviation Electrician Second Class. Not the end of the story, I reenlisted in February 1963 and thinking I would be sent back to ASW and wound up in a fighter squadran (VF 96) in NAS Miramar, California. After six years and two tours in the Viet Nam area (one on the USS Ranger 1964/65and one on the USS Enterprise 1965/66), I left the Navy in 1969 as a E6. Since then I have been in the telephone world and retired for the second time in 2007 I was 67. Most of my time was spent in the Atlanta area. I now live in Somerset KY..." GRAHAM, CAPTAIN Genie K. (Gene) Retired gene.graham@mchsi.com "...My first tour of duty after flight training was VW-11 (1960 to 1962), all on Crew 3. Started flying at NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada but moved to NAS Keflavik, Iceland in 1961. Flew first operational flight out of NAS Keflavik, Iceland on July 1, 1961. Next came a tour with the "Flying Phantoms", VP-18 (1963 to 1965), Crew 3, 12, 5 and 9 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida and NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. After two years in Monterey, reported to VP-31 Det NORIS as Safety Officer (1967 to 1969). My tour in purgatory came on USS, Independence from 1969 to 1971 as Assistantt CIC and then CIC after boss was fired. On to the "Pelicans", VP-45, as ADMIN and OPS Officer (1972 to 1975) Crew 21. Finally made it into the P-3 community, brand new P-3C's by the way. A new airplane smells just like a new car. One year in DC at George Washington University for my MBA and back to NAS Jacksonville, Florida as XO of VP-30 (1976 to 1977). Next stop with "World Famous Batmen", VP-24 as XO/CO (1977 to 1979). After four years on OPNAV and SECNAV staff, retired as Captain in 1983. Payback is HELL, my son was NROTC and stayed in Navy for 9 years. Seems that everywhere he was stationed, someone was waiting with a "Genie K story". Not all of those would I have chosen to share with my son! Happily, I can say, he was not tainted. Second career was with EDS and I enjoyed it very much. Jerry Lynn, bless her heart, has stayed with me for 44 years and counting, and we have retired to Fairhope, AL. Stay in touch!..." [08APR2004]

I remain fairly current on VP issues through the VPI magazine, and my son-in-law, who is an active duty chief presently assigned to the "Buzzards". Good luck &, "keep flying 'em safe"..." [07APR98]

MOSSBURG, Albert L. Jr. almosscjm@aol.com "...I flew in VP-18 Neptunes out of NS Roosevelt Roads, PR in 1965-1966. I can still remember the long 14 hour patrols sitting in the radio compartment listening to the traffic. I can remember the Morse Code calls I made to Goose Bay, Newfoundland for weather and temperature checks and after hearing that it was -12 I would inform those poor suckers that it was 87 and sunny where I was. I remember the detachment of two planes from our squadron at NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the missles pointed at "Gitmo" from Guantanamo City, just on the other side of the fence. I plan a trip to Loquillo in Puerto Rico with my family in August of 2000. It will be my first trip back. I would love to hear from anyone who served with VP-18 during the years 1965 to 1967. The old girl shook, rattled, and rolled but I loved her like a mistress. The view from the front dome has never been paralelled by any amusement ride or any other panoramic view. Flying with the back windows opened, dropping box lunch garbage on Russian ships, and generally having the best times of my life with my crew co-horts are just a few of the memories I will carry to the end of my life..." We got to spend a month in NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba every third month. Was on flight crew all of the time as a electronics tech/Jez operator for my entire tour with the squadron. Did 10 hour patrols every third day and loved it! Haven't seen anything on VP-18 - Flying Phantoms - on the site yet and see you don't have anything on the "Mishap" we had at NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. We either blew a tire on landing or it was flat when we landed. We ran off the runway and into the arresting gear housing blockhouse and totally destroyed the aircraft. Tore the starboard wing about off, collapsed the gear on the port side, and slid a good piece down the runway. Fortunately there was no fire or injuries, and it was not even our bird. We had taken the ready one aircraft that day! The regular crew was not too happy! Keep up the good work on the site. I will bookmark it and come back to check the many areas I haven't visited yet. He received a special award for winning the Flight Safety Award for three consecutive quarters. From June 1949 to July 1952, Captain Pollock was an instructor at the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and in that assignment, participated in the early atomic tests at Desert Rock, Nevada. Following duty as Special Assistant (plans for atomic matters) to the Commander Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, he reported in February 1953 as executive officer of the escort carrier, USS Mindoro. After the carrier conducted early U.S. Marine Corps helicopter troop landing operations for the development of vertical envelopment concepts, Pollock was reassigned to the Staff of Commander, Carrier Division 16, as Operations Officer. In that post, he developed antisubmarine warfare tactics and advanced magnetic detection techniques and participated in the NATO antisubmarine warfare exercise CENTERBOARD critique in Lisbon. We always had a three plane detachment from VP-18 out of NS Roosevelt Roads, PR assigned to us flying surveillance and ASW patrols. I got to fly on Neptunes a few times and really enjoyed it. On my very first flight with VP-18 we lost our starboard engine three hours into a patrol and had to return to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Seeing the crash trucks lining the runway and assuming crash positions was a little exciting but we landed without incident. My duties at the OPCON consisted of plotting patrol locations, communicating with the aircraft while on patrol and processing photos and other information gathered by the flights. I loved the nose seat in the P2V's, what a blast. That got me hooked on flying and I obtained a private pilots license and owned my own plane for a few years. My call sign was Jet Assist when communicating with the Neptunes which were assigned call signs of Jet Assist 1, 2, or 3. I have fond memories of Gitmo and VP-18. I was on the jumpseat during take off on a detachment to NS Rota, Spain when the 2P pulled up the Landing Gear Handle during the takeoff roll. We ended up nose landing on the runway. Fortunately we all walked away unharmed except for a minor arm injury. In July of 1976 I rejoined the Navy as a TAR and eventually retired in the VR Program serving as Flight Engineer, NATOPS Instructor, and Wing Evaluator on the C-118 with VR-52, NAS Glenview, Illinois and CFLSW. In VR-62 NAF Detroit, Michigan I served as Maintenance and Leading Chief, in VR-54, VR-48, VR-53 and VR-46. I retired in November of 1999 as the Command Master Chief of VR-46 NAS Atlanta, Georgia. My military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (1 award), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards), Good Conduct Medal (7 awards), National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Expeditionary Medal and the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal. I am presently Department Chair of the Avionics/Aviation Department at Atlanta Technical College. I make my home in Dallas, Georgia with my wife Catherine, Granddaughter Brittany, Chelsea our Cocker and Gracie our Cat. I will never forget the good times, great friends and life long Shipmates in VP-18..." P2V-7 Buno: 135553, HF-12. We received it new in the squadron in early August 1955, deployed the next day to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. (The rest of the aircraft had already left NAS Jacksonville, Florida so I parked it on VP-16's line for the night. During pre-flight the next morning, my Plane AD1 Howell and Radioman Martinoff found that VP-16 swapped out our brand new radios with theirs from 135 series P2V-5's. I won't get into the details, but suffice it to say this lowly JG was able to get everything returned and launched within 90 minutes for the five month deployment to Iceland.) I have been looking for that site and picture but can't find it. There were some other shots as well. This particular one was taken with that K20 camera we used to carry and I suspect my ordnanceman Penny took the picture. Any clue on how to proceed will be appreciated..." [23AUG99]

SMITH, ATN2 Raymond E. Jr. raymondesmith@hotmail.com "...I served with VP-18 as electronics technician and aircrew member as radioman and later second tech (ATN2) during the 1962 - 1964 time period. I was part of a detachment to Key West during the Cuban missle crisis and spent many hours on flights flying over ships going in and out of Havana and noting their names and port of registry. US ports were supposed to refuse to load/unload ships after they had been seen trading with Cuba during that time. Many of the ships were British but occassionally there was a big Russian cruise ship bringing 'technicians' to/from Cuba. I was part of a deployment to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada during February and spend some time 'flying the ice patrols' with a stop or two to NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. I was part of a 6 month detachment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland and flew many times from NAS Keflavik, Iceland and will always remember the montly r/r trips to Norway and/or Denmark where we were 'exercising our NATO rights' stopping at several sites in Northern Norway before going to Oslo or Copenhagen for a few days. I was 'out on the town' in Copenhagen the night that Kennedy was shot and won't forget the people's reaction when news that our president had been killed was first broadcast there -- with many inital errors I might add -- like the 'President of Mexico was also shot' when they meant the governer of Texas, John Connelly. I made a UNITAS 'goodwill' trip to South America that lasted 103 days I will never forget. I wish I could afford to make that trip again -- and was 21 or so again too.
