VP-17 Shipmates
ADDIS, Craig A. craig.a.addis@saic.com "...I served with VP-17 NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii in 1979 as an airmen and VP-31 NAS Moffett Field, California for training and learning MAD, Difar/Lofar, and other ASW equipment for "I" Level maintainablity. Being an AX, which is not a part of the Navy rate designation today, made my job more rewarding knowing that to operate, search and find you must know how it works! All AW's and TACCO's were great to contribute ideas and their inputs to help keep the equipment in top shape. Being TDY to NAS's made "I" Level guys dealing with two commands vs. just one. Detached in 1980 to NAS Agana, Guam during one of the first terrorist strikes, the Iranian Hostage takeover. Vietnam Boat People and the Iranians kept us hopping in the Pacific from 1980 to 1981. Deployment to PI in 1981 was completed during the timeframe of Med cruises taking shots at Libya. I miss one Shipmate dearly, AXC Blair who died later in the mid 1980's. Recently I found out how he passed! My request of information on him was answered by several Shipmates, including his CO. Thanks again, Pete and Chuck. ;-) I flew many flights as a non-aircrewman to help out on battered Super B ASW equipment and to enhance communications between AW's TACCO's and repair. These were the most exciting days of my career. ASW searchs and "Time on Top" was by far the best ride that a salior could ask for. I accounted for over 40 + mission flights in the Pacific between all of the islands that made up the USN footprint back then. Not bad for a non-aircrewman. The VP-17 White Lightings were flight accident free for 17 years when I left in late 1982. That record stood for a longtime. Like to hear from old Shipmates....you know who you are.! Kids are grown up and out of college....Tara and I are living it up!..." [25APR2006]
Circa 1964 "...ADDISON, LCDR LeRoy E. II, "Roy"...LeRoy E. Addison II, “Roy”, faithful husband, loving father, and loyal friend died peacefully in El Cajon after a second battle with colon cancer at the age of 78. Roy is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and four children: Bennett (preceded in death), James, Victor and Angelique. Roy also had seven loving grandchildren: BJ (preceded in death), Justin, Sylvia, Christina, Harper, Crawford, Story, Crenshaw and two great grandchildren: Evelynne and Maurice. Roy loved his country and actively served in the United States Navy for 26 years, retiring as a Lt. Commander. Roy went on to a second career with the San Diego Union Tribune. He was committed to his church, served with Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the VFW. Roy was described as "that guy who would help you in any way he could." He was a mentor to many young people in his life and had long lasting relationships with them. Roy had an engaging smile and took the time to talk with everyone. He was most commonly described as "such a sweet man." Roy’s kindness and generosity will be greatly missed. Funeral Services will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on February 09 at 1:30 pm. It was Roy’s wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to St Jude’s Children Hospital. BAUMANN, Fred razbdaz1@comcast.net "...I proudly served with VP-17 from January 1963 to February 1966 as Aircrew Bow/MAD operator and will never forget the great experiences that I treasure to this day. I believe we all recall that these times spent, sometimes under difficult conditions still remain our best years. Who can forget those 11 hour patrols in Poopie suits, with the only relief for internal air coming out of the plexi neck brace. My first crew position, a green AEAN flying in CDR McKinney's ZE-1 out of NAS Kodiak, Alaska, NAS Adak, Alaska and AF Shemya, and unloading our garbage bags on the iced in Ruskie fishing trawlers. Or, was that on our second tour in LCDR Child's ZE-5 that took us up around Pt. Barrow to become "Blue Noses" and those unforgettable ATC talk downs to no seeum runway approaches into NAS Adak, Alaska and AFB Shemya. Especially exciting when they were ready to scramble the "Sky King" Tankers! Coming home with a Bombay full of cooked King Crab legs. Then our great deployments in Crew-5 (Ole Yellar) 1964 to NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan, 1965 to NAS Iwakuni, Japan with detachments twice to Taiwan, remember the continuous Monopoly game as "Ready Crew", twice to frigid AF Sapporo, Japan and who can forget our stay in the 5 Star Bien Hoa Hotel , I believe three times. Bami Bam (33), Pomme Frites and Buffalo Steaks, all on our Per Diem of course. How about drain holes in the Maintenance tent courtesy of a M-14 or, hanging with the AT's in the A/C cooled trailers. "Xin Loi" (Sorry about that) said the side of ZE-5 as we cruised down and around Nam, looking for the bad guys. Sitting on our traded for Flak Jackets from the Helo Boys and calling in the AF when we spotted something. Who complained we were young and invincible. Great times, love to hear from my old Shipmates, if you remember me..." [28MAY2006]

BENNING, ADC John Retired navychief97@hotmail.com "...Enlisted August 1973 with the intention of serving for a couple of years.....24-years later I retired as an ADC...Quite a ride! Throughout my career I moved around the aviation community, serving in VF-124, VRC-50, NAS Key West, Florida, VP-4, VP-17, VQ-2, NADC Johnsville, Pennsylvania and CPW-10. It was all memorable, but the P-3 time was especially rewarding. As a FE working in the maintenance department I had the best of both worlds, interacting with professional flight crew as well as outstanding maintainers. My Navy training and experience directly resulted in my continuing with aviation after retirement, first with Boeing, then with the FAA, where I currently manage the FAA International Field Office in Frankfurt, Germany. My experience an an FAA manager requires me to be "The Chief" years after hanging up the uniform and donning civvies. My 1st tour was with VP-17 84-88. Seen a lot of places that today's Sailor probably won't. As an AD2 I did my "I" level tour at NAS Point Mugu, California IMA 88-90. Got a phone call to go work in Dallas with NMPC SDC (later redesignated BUPERS SDC) 90-94. What a time there. I didn't know one could travel so much. As an AD1 I made my way to NRL FSD at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. Rich, Dean, Don and the rest of the Mess, Thanks. Went kicking and screaming to HM-15 out of NAS Corpus Christi, Texas 98-01. Turned out to be just what I needed. Nothing like jumping on an old ship (USS INCHON) and going straight into a combat zone (Kosovo). The USS TARAWA was much nicer. Or was that because I was no longer the Flight Deck coordinator? HA! My last tour brought me back to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland at NAVAIR only to ride a desk 01-05. COATES, Richard (Dick) Retired rcoates654@yahoo.com "...I started my NAVY journey 9/55 with 3 yrs at GMAU-0411, Oceana (GF3); 12/58 GM div. USS Intrepid (GF2/AT2); 8/60 Kitty Hawk CVA-63 pre-com; 2/62; AT(B), (AT1); 12/62 VA-127 NAS Lemoore, California; My life changed 1/66 when I got orders to VP-17 via VP-31 at NORIS. I was destined to have the time of my life in the VP Navy. My wife was worried that I could get hurt flying in "one of those things!" I said "flying in a P2V is safer than walking the store." The next day there was a picture of a sinking VP-31 P2V on the front page of the local rag. They had cross feed problems, and the fans quit turnin'. They set her down alongside a Coast Guard cutter loaded with PSA stewardeses on a survival training cruise! (I don't think they even got wet.) After the RAG, I was assigned to VP-17 crew 12 with a great bunch of guys. PPC Charlie Cook, P2P Lee Houston, NAV Rick Tolly, TACCO is fuzzy, he was LT. ex QM, PC Snick Gramms ADJ1 (NY good guy), JULIE AT3 Rothlesburger, JEZ-(brain lapse.. I saw him in 79 at NORIS CPO club (he was a AWCS), AO1 Jim Young, and last, but not least AE2 Robert J. Prestovic our token electrician and fantastic scrounger. (He "borrowed" a trailing wire weight from the Coastes at NS Sangley Point, Philippines! I needed a spare, but I made him take it back anyway.) (Ski is USCG ret now.) We had a good deployment to TSN Saigon, but when the skipper said we were going home and returning asap (6 Mo) I was struck with this gawd awfull dumb-ass attack and said, "I not goin', my enlistment is up in 6 mo." JUNE 1967 I transferred to reserve VP-891 at NAS Sand Point, WA. Which became VP-69. Flew with a bunch of good guys there for 3 years, but I missed the REAL NAVY! July 70 transferred to VP-6 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. I flew for a while, but not assigned to a crew. If I remember right they had more than enough flyers, and short on folks to keep em flyin' so I spent most of my 3 years there in WC210 with AXC Domier, AT2 O.T. Frampton III, AT2 Moore (UH student), AT3 Don Inaura, (now AVCM ret, a good friend and neighbor), many IFT and RDO crews, too many more, I don't remember. I left VP-6 July 73 for NATTC NAS Memphis, Tennessee and AVC7 school. Three years of Instructor duty at AVC7. Then on to - VF-1 (The NAVY should never send VP sailors to fix F14's) Finished my BS Ed in San Diego. I put on the Hat in 77 and retired 12/79. The Navy had exacted their revenge for breaking the faith in 1967. Any one out there that wants to tell sea stories, send me an e-mail or stop by I'm your friendly travel agent at NAS Miramar. I would really like to hear a better one than I can tell..." [E-Mail Updated 04JUL2001 | 01JUN2001]
