BOOKs: Title: "Cameras Over The Pacific: Marine Photographic Squadron 254" by K. Ray Marrs. An often-overlooked aspect of WW II history is the important role played by the U.S. Marine photographic reconnaissance squadrons. At the beginning of the war it was realized that photo reconnaissance of the vast Pacific theater would be essential, so the first two (later increased to four) Marine photo squadrons were established. This is the true story of one such squadron, VMD-254, and its heroic and sometimes amusing exploits. Two crews from this squadron, flying B-24 Liberators, accomplished one of the most important reconnaissance missions of the war when they successfully photographed the Japanese stronghold, Truk. The photographs and information provided by that mission eliminated the need for an Allied invasion, saving countless American lives. This book features over 170 photographs taken by the men of VMD-254. These original photographs, maps and charts have never before been published, having been in the private collections of VMD-254's veterans since the end of the war.
