LONG, ATW2 Clifford C. clonger1@frontier.com "...I enlisted in the Navy in January of 1962 for the sole purpose of getting to a patrol squadron and becoming part of a flight crew!! I wanted to be an "AIRDALE" just like my older brother. I ended up on the trail of that goal through AT school in NAS Memphis, Tennessee, CIC school in NAS Glynco, Georgia and got my orders to my first squadron, VW-11, NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada. Arrived at NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada on Easter 1963 and was met at the bottom of the aft ladder of the EC-121 that delivered me, by a navy yoeman, who handed me a set of orders to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, where I was to join my crew. It was Crew 4, the Black Widows. Captain Bunce was the Plane Commander, Lt. JG Webb was my CIC officer and I remember that the Flight Engineer was a big redhead Chief by the name of Kellog. I spent 95% of my time deployed to NAS Keflavik, Iceland, and flew as a CIC/RADAR/ECM operator on other crews when crew 4 returned to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada. I accumulated 1500 Hrs of EC-121K flight time. During my over 100 missions, I saw The volcano Surtsey eruption the morning of Nov. 12 1963, was flying the West Barrier when on November 22, 1963, at 1530 Zulu was notified by OPCON that JFK was shot and flew a 18 hr. mission that day. Found out when we landed that JFK was dead. By the way, the commander of COMBARFORLANT, was Commodore Scarpino. During my VW-11 tour, I got to "abort" to Prestwick Scotland many times and ultimately met and married a Scottish Lassie, who is my current wife of 50 years. Spent many days/nights at the Red Lion Hotel in Ayr. Established a "Willy Victor" room with the help of John Woods the owner/operator. Flew my last mission in mid October 1964, I believe it was on a ASW modified EC-121K Aircraft, BUNO 145940. I received my orders to VAW-33 NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Flew as an operator on the Guppy Aircraft, an AD5W, detatched to the USS Lake Champlain CVS-39, the last of the WWII straight deck carriers. Got a 6 month extension due to world events, deployed aboard ship to take part in the Dominican Republic "flurry". Discharged May 1966 as an ATW2 and returned to my Home town of Huron Ohio. Give me a shout if you want to exchange stories..." [09JUL2015]

I went on two or three Med cruises aboard USS Saratoga, USS Independence, was also aboard USS Enterprse just before she went on world cruise. Might have been during the Cuban missile blockade.
