Memorial Picture "...HOLMBERG, Ron...I received the following from JD Meyer, President of the VQ Association concerning the passing of Ron Holmberg.

"...To All VQ:

This is to advise you all of the passing of the our secretary for the past number of years. Ron finished his work and life here on earth, and left us to join his Heavenly Father on Thursday evening at about 9:30 PM, 17 January 2002. His pain and suffering ended then and he is now in the comfort and loving arms of our Lord.

The immediate family he has left includes his wife, Shawnee, and their son, Ryan. There are many other family members who will remember his as well. As of this writing the details of a memorial service are not known. Nor are any of his wishes and desires for those wanting to recognize his life. He did ask that his remains be cremated and his ashes scattered near Santa Cruz, CA, an area that was his favorite. As his family makes the decisions on the commemoration of his life I will pass that information along as it is made known.

As some of you may know Ron served a total of thirteen (13) years with VQ-1 at NAS Atsugi, Japan. He retired from the Navy as a CTICS. Since leaving the active duty he has worked in the firm of Klein and Stump, Inc. He volunteered to be the secretary of the VQ Association when the search for a replacement for our original secretary was underway. Never once have I regretted accepting his offer. I know our Association is much better organized as a direct result of his efforts. He was a master (none better) in the utilization of the personal computer and its capabilities. He used his skill in supporting us all via our association. Most notable in my opinion is our association web site (http://www.kleinandstump.com/VQ/index.htm ), which he independently created.

As our last reunion was coming Ron worked tirelessly to collect all the information, record it, and forward it to the people who needed it. He opted not to attend and instead visit with his brother in California. When he returned from there he was not feeling particularly well, experiencing a persistent cough, pain, lack of appetite and weight loss. His doctors referred him to Johns Hopkins near early November where the diagnosis was the one most feared by us all. The prognosis was not the most positive but he entered into the chemotherapy treatment process the advised and recommended. Although the prognosis did not materially change as the progressed Ron seemed to be holding his own. However, this past week proved otherwise, athe intensity of his pain never subsided. And on Thursday evening his strengthen ran out and he left this life.

Ron, we sincerely thank you for the many ways you have enriched our lives, and added to good fellowship we enjoy. Your many contributions to our VQ community are appreciated, and will be long remembered by each of us. You made my task of being president a real pleasue. Thank you and God bless.

With sincerest humility,

J D Meyer, VQ Association President

PS. For those who have communication with the secretary please forward your requests, questions, etc. to me. Also feel free to pass this message to anyone who you know may be interested..." Contributed by Mel Davidow meldavidow@earthlink.net [21JAN2002]

He passed away January 19, 1998 and I had received the model as a Christmas present prior to his death from my stepson. Due to grief over the passing of my favorite Uncle I didn't begin working on it till this winter. As I worked on it I began wondering where he sat in the aircraft. Having some computer/internet skill I decided to do a search on "PBY Catalina 5" and I fell into numerous web sites. VPNAVY was and is outstanding. I was not only able to answer my simple question of seating but much to my amazement I have been in touch with three gentlemen who flew with my Uncle and have blown life into my vague recollections from childhood stories. "Slim" was part of VP and VPB 23, a Pearl Harbor survivior who actually was one of the first to shoot back at the Japanese from his disabled aircraft!...Messrs Francis Clifton, Billy "Buck" Bulkley and Harry La Brie (via his daughter Leslie) all have contributed interesting and detailed information from this period for which I am most gratfull. I went up to the site the day after the accident occurred. It was gruesome to say the least. I dealt with a lot of guys assigned to the Squadrons as my shop provided Audio equipment set up and operation for Changes of Command and other similar functions. I even talked to my Chief about cross over to an Aviation rate, which was denied. I thought it would be more fun to fly than sit around BNAS. HOLCOMB, John Deceased (July 2004) FlyVB144@aol.com "... I joined the Navy February 12 1942. Following six weeks of boot camp Great Lakes Naval Station, I attended radio school San Point Naval Air Station Washington. Upon graduation I was ordered to report to VGS 11 (Escort Scouting squadron Eleven) consisting of F4F fighters and TBF (Avenger Torpedo Bombers) as radioman/tail gunner and immediately moved to Whidby Island. Our first mission was Submarine patrol. The squadron was then ordered to join the newly commissioned jeep aircraft carrier U.S.S. Altamaha. The first mission for the U. S. S. Alltamaha (CVE 18) was transporting aircraft, Marines, supplies and equipment to Esperito Santo in support of the marines fighting on Guadalcanal. Completing that mission the carrier joined the fleet as an operating carrier for a brief period off the coast of Esperito Santo then on to New Caledonia. From that point on primary duties of the U.S. S. Altamaha was transporting aircraft, supplies and personnel to various U.S. held strongholds through out the pacific. Completing that assignment she returned to San Diego, We trained pilots night and day in carrier take off and landings procedures. At this juncture I was ordered to report to VB-144 as one of the first enlisted men to come on board. Almost immediately on arrival I received orders to report to radar school, Corpus Christi Texas, upon completion I rejoined VB-144 Alameda Naval Air Station. Following intensive training, the squadron was ordered to Pearl Harbor Hawaii via the aircraft carrier U. S. S. Copahee (CVE 12). Arriving Pear Harbor, aircraft were off loaded and After a few minor repairs to the aircraft caused by heavy seas were flown to Kaneohe Bay where patrols were carried out daily. The squadron also acted as navigators for fighter and dive bomber aircraft to various Islands throughout the pacific starting with escorting aircraft to Midway and Guam from Kaneohee Bay. It was here that Lt. Brady tested the first under wing rockets for Admiral Nimitz and a host of other Navy brass. The squadron sent contingents for patrol duty to Johnston Atoll and Midway Island joining up at Johnston Atoll for Christmas Dec 25, 1943. We then returned to Kaneohe bay where the squadron departed in groups of three aircraft destination Tarawa. From Tarawa the squadron carried out patrols, bombing, reconnaissance and killer hunter strikes throughout the central pacific including the remainder of the Gilbert islands, Eastern Caroline and Marshall Islands in support of the island hopping campaign as it moved forward, moving to Roi Namur and kwajalien at this point we were using Tarawa, Roi Namur and Kwajalien in our air strikes. We became quite familiar with names such as, -Betio, Ailinglapalap. Ebey, Mille, Kusai, Wotje, Funa Futi, Nauru, Taroa, Majuro, Roi-Namur, Taonga, Jaluit, Kwajalein. Makin, Palmyra, Canton. HOLMES, CDR Francis M. (Frank) Shipmate Pix2005 Shipmate Pix1966 Shipmate Pix1947 Shipmate Pix1945 Shipmate Pix1942 fholmes101@aol.com "...Frank Holmes was called to active duty in the US Navy on August 1942 as a V5 Aviation Cadet and completed Primary Civilian Pilot Training (CPT) at Quincy, Illinois; Secondary (CPT) at Iowa City, Iowa; USN Preflight School at Iowa City, Iowa and Primary Flight Training at NAS Glenview, Illinois. He completed all other phases of Flight Training at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas and was commissioned as Ens USNR on April 8, 1944 with operational qualifications in OS2U aircraft. His first assignment, following some leave and travel, was with Scouting Squadron 48 (VS-48), flying OS2Us, doing inshore patrol in Southeastern Alaska. VS-48 soon moved to NAS Attu, Alaska where they continued inshore patrol and flew air sea rescue for the Navy squadrons on bombing missions against the Kurile Islands. In a few months VS-48 was split into detachments and moved to other areas in the Aleutians, one of which was Dutch Harbor. Although he had only been commissioned a few months, he drew the assignment as Senior Aviator (Officer-in-Charge) of VS-48 Detachment Dutch Harbor. At Dutch Harbor they soon transitioned from OS2Us to SBD-5s and continued their mission of inshore patrol. The Aleutian challenge was the weather, seldom good and always unpredictable. As a squadron, VS-48 lost five aircraft; three due to weather and two because of mechanical malfunctions. Ens Holmes lost one of the five -- when the engine quit, he ditched in the bay off Dutch Harbor. His crew member and he survived with minor injuries -- the only surviving crew from the five who were lost. In June 1945 he returned to the states for reassignment and operational training in TBMs at NAS Ft Lauderdale, Florida. When World War II ended he sought release from active duty and was granted same. Caryl and Frank were married in Ft Lauderdale and lived there for a few months before returning to the Chicago area where they lived with her parents as they struggled with what to do with their lives. Frank wanted to return to college but colleges were crowded and worst of all housing was practically non-existent and by now they were expecting. All this was settled for them when Frank received an invitation from the Navy for a change in status from USNR to USN and an immediate return to active duty. He returned to active duty Dec 13, 1946. Following years included duty with: VA22a - TBM Operational Training Squadron at NAS North Island, San Diego, California (Carrier Qualification), VA12a - TBM Squadron in Air Group 11 aboard the USS Valley Forge, FASRON-11 - NAS Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Oahu and Yokuska Japan, NAVAL AIR TECHNICAL TRAINING UNIT - NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey (PC R4D), VR-1 - R5D & R7V Squadron at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland (PC R5D & PC R7V), USN Post Graduate School Monterey, CA -- Line School, NROTC Tulane -- College Refresher, Naval Preflight School Pensecola - Military Science Instructor USN Post Graduate School Monterey CA -- Engineering School (BS Aeronautical Eng), NROTC Ames Iowa (MS Nuclear Engineering), VP-16 -- P2V squadron at NAS Jacksonville, Florida and NAS Sigonella, Sicily (PPC P2V), BUWEPS -- Project Manager Navy Navigation Satellite System at Washington D.C., NAS Point Mugu, California - Operations Officer Navy Astronautics Group where upon completion of his assignment there Frank retired from active naval service on July 1, 1966 as a Commander. Frank believes that his greatest contribution to Aviation and Space programs came during the six years that he spent as Project Manager of the Navy Navigation Satellite System (TRANSIT) during its development at BUWEPS and subsequently as Operations Officer at the Navy Astronautics Group during its initial operational deployment. After completing 24 years in the Navy, Frank started a second career with TRW Systems in Redondo Beach, California where he was to complete another 24 years in a wide variety of interesting and challenging assignments in the world of Aerospace systems and Computer related mission applications. In 1968, he completed the requirements for and received a Master of Engineering degree from UCLA. He managed the first study of what is now the Global Positioning System (GPS) that has become so widely used today. Among other interesting assignments, Caryl accompanied him to: Australia where he served at the US/Australia Joint Defence Research Facility and, Italy where he led a multinational team of engineers in the development of command and control computer system requirements for Commander Naval Forces South (NATO). On July 1, 1990 he left employment for pay and started working on his next 24 year tour as a volunteer with: AARP Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (VITA/TCE) program as a Local Coordinator; The Retired Activities Office (NRAO) at Naval Station Long Beach/ Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach as Assistant Director; The WWII USN Scouting Squadron's Association as Vice President; and St Paul's Lutheran Church as Men's Group Leader..." I made AE-2 in VP-22 and made the '72 Naha Okinawa deployment. That was the era of "Canadian Geese", when Cdr. Canada was the C.O.. I worked for AE1 Jim Watt at the time and then, AE-2 Jack With. We had a real good crew of AEs back then. I remember Jeff Powers, Bob Driscoll, Al Ferguson, AEC Pointer and several others that I remember their faces but can't think of their names. I had a good buddy named Jeff Kephart (AD2) that I've been trying to locate for years, so if anyone knows how I can contact him, please let me know. When I left VP-22 in July '73, I went to AV-I "B" school in NAS Memphis, Tennessee and after that I was sent to USS Ranger (CV-61) for two years as ship's company in AIMD. I made AE-1 while attached to Ranger. After a good tour on Ranger I went to VA-121 in NAS Lemoore, California until they disestablished and I was sent to VA-122, TAD to AIMD. I swapped orders with another AE in AIMD and took his orders to VR-30, NAS Alameda, California, where I was the Electric shop supervisor / Maintenance Control watchstander. When the Squadron changed home ports to San Diego, I terminated my shore duty and went to VP-47 at NAS Moffett Field, California (after FRAMP training with VP-31) and I was the AE Shop Supervisor. We deployed to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan in '79 and had an aircraft experience three engine shut down on the transpac back to NAS Moffett Field, California. I believe that was RD-11, with T. J. Templeton as the F/E on board. I made AEC and I was made the AV/ARM Division Chief. We deployed to NAS Misawa, Japan in February of '81, that was one cold SOB. I worked Maintenance Control (Early Crew) for the rest of my time in the Squadron. In May '82 I went to Instructor Training in San Diego and then went to NAMTRADET 1012, "Orion University" at NAS Moffett Field, California. I was the AE Phase Chief and I also taught the P-3C "O" level Electrical Systems course and the LTN-72 "O" level maintenance. I was the Assistant Aircraft Division Chief too. When I left NAMTRADET 1012, I went to VP-19 for my last year in the Good 'Ole Nav. I was the Expediter and Maintenance Control Chief and made a deployment back to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan and I left the Squadron there and came back to NAS Moffett Field, California to "Muster Out" and retired August '86. Since that time, I was a NAESU Tech Rep at NAS Moffett Field, California for 9 years, spent one year at NADEP NAS Alameda, California in the ARIES II Modification section, working in engineering, and I'm currently working for the FAA as an Aviation Safety Inspector in San Francisco Certificate Management Office, where we manage the operating certificate for United Airlines. I've just recently discovered this web site and I see a lot of names of people from the past that I'm going to contact, so if any old "Shipmates" out there want to contact me, please do. I don't have an e-mail address at home yet, but when I do, I'll let you know..." [E-Mail Updated 06APR99 | 17MAR99]

I was also on a beartrap crew and participated in Project Unitas with trips to Peru and Brazil (great time!)...I had two interesting tours between P-3 squadrons, first as a DLA test pilot buying new C-12s and T-34Cs at the Beechcraft factory in Wichita Kansas from '80 - '83, and then as a C-12 instructor, CNAP Natops evaluator and department head for VRC-30 in NAS North Island, San Diego, California from '83 - '86...After a one year tour at the Naval War College, I came back to NAS Moffett Field, California and VP-9. I was a dept head from Sept 1987 - Oct 1989, crew 3 (Rude Dogs), and made a multi-site deployment to NSF Diego Garcia with 2 dets to Dharhan Saudi Arabia in support of Earnest Will, and finished the deployment flying ISAR and special ops between NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan and NAF Misawa, Japan (Turkey Day in the Desert and Christmas in the snow!)...From there I went on to be the Base Ops Officer at NAS Moffett Field, California and then on to be the XO of the base from 1990 til closure in 1994. I retired from the Navy in '95 and went to work for NASA Ames Research Center to help them manage "Moffett Federal Airfield" as a shared federal facility, and was part of the team that created another concept for reuse of the base called the NASA Research Park (http://researchpark.arc.nasa.gov/). I also worked on creating the California Air and Space Center which is now called Space World Hangar One (http://casc.arc.nasa.gov/inside.html). I worked with NASA until 2000 when I got the chance to be the Director of Facilities for The Tech Museum in San Jose (http://www.TheTech.org). After only 18 months of fun with this wonderful non-profit museum I was offered a chance to get back into airport management and I couldn't pass up the opportunity. After a short one year stint as the Assistant Director, I am now the Director of County Airports for Santa Clara County (http://www.countyairports.org). We manage the three GA airports in Silicon Valley (Palo Alto, Reid-Hillview and South County/San Martin airports). With over 1400 based aircraft and nearly 500,000 operations per year at the three airports we keep pretty busy. Since retirement I've been involved with Navy League (past president of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter), the Moffett Field Historical Society (second president) (http://www.moffettfieldmuseum.org), the Aero Club of Northern California, the San Jose International Airport Commission and various other aviation/veterans organizations. Steaming as part of the task force going from Espirito Santo to try to stop the Japanesse resupply of their troops on Guadalcanal, the decision was made to not have airplanes on board because of the fire hazard. Two of the SOCs from each of 4 cruisers were sent back to Espirito Santo. Royal Dickason and I on the New Orleans were selected for that. We expected to return to the ship later, but in the battle her bow was blown off back to the Number 2 turret. We never did see the ship again although she was repaired and returned to the fleet, taking part in the later action in the Pacific. There were crews from several damaged or sunk cruisers at Espirito Santo assigned to fly with a squadron flying inshore patrol in OS2U seaplanes. Later we were sent to New Caledonia. Then came orders to return to ComAirPac for reassignment and several of the SOC pilots received orders to VB-144. It was quite a transition from the obsolete seaplanes to the PV1 Ventura but we all successfully made the transition and spent a most interesting tour in the Central Pacific Theater operating from Tarawa an Roi Namur in the Quajalein atoll. I believe we did make a valuable contribution to the successful conclusion of the war..." [12JUL99]

HORTON, George H GHorton424@aol.com "...I was in VU-4 and my main assignment was to gas aircraft. After serving my time at Chincoteague I was flown to NAS Norfolk, Virginia for separation. I can't remember what plane I was in but it was two motored with a tricycle landing gear just before landing at the NAS Norfolk, Virginia we had to shut down one engine over chesapeake bay when we landed the nose wheel colapsed and the port tire blew out. When the plane came to the stop I opened the blister and jumped out when I tried to stand up my legs just would not do it even though I was not injured. A chief in a jeep came upon me and helped me in the jeep he took me to the chiefs club and gave me a couple of belt of booze and I could now navigate again. I remember we had Culver Cadet Planes and one day the chief took off in one and when he tried to land the gear would not crank down as he approached his landing he knocked about 5 inches off each side of his one bladed prop he looked like a drunken sailor flying around till he finally landed. We were in a PBY and I was reeling out the tow cable for a sock for the fleet to practice with after awhile we felt a shock and saw the sock fall. When I reeled in the cable there was only 50 feet left. We got the hell out of there. Retired housman@adelphia.net "...I just surfed all over Internet on the subject of VP, VS, ZP squadron information and I just had to let you know how thrilled I am to find people who served in the same Navy as I did in the 1950s. Regarding VP-871, VP-872, VS-872, and ZP-871. Let me tell you that I served as a TAR (station keeper) at NAS Oakland, California between April 1955 and September 1961. And after that I was a drilling reservist at NARTU NAS Alameda, California until around 1974. Oh, the sea stories that I could tell you! But I don't know if any of you remember me. I was the WAVE who worked in the Link Shack at NAS Oakland, California as an AN, a TD striker, a TD3 and a TD2. I was 23 years old in April 1955 when I checked aboard NAS Oakland, California and when I checked aboard my last name was LAUER. I eventually got back my maiden name of HOUSMAN and then I married a Marine (gasp!) and took on the the name of PATELLA. Note: I'm back to HOUSMAN again! But what I want to let all of you know is that I have vivid memories of all the squadrons that were there at NAS Oakland, California in the 1950s and I remember the planes that I flew in--P2Vs, SNBs R4D8s, R4Q2s, R4Ds, R5Ds, HUP-2s, ZSG-3s, PB4Y2s TV2s and SNJs--remind me to tell you the hairy story of my flight in an SNJ with an obsolete AAU reserve pilot at the controls! So if you were stationed at NAS Oakland, California in the late 50s, I'd love to compare notes with you. In my memory, those were the golden years of the Navy..." [22MAR2001]

HOWARD, PHCS (NAC) Dave Retired daveh@howent.com "...Hello fellow Shipmates of VP-44. Thrilled to see some names that were very familiar. I served with VP-44 from 1979-1981. We did the first deployment of P-3 Update II aircraft to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. Then was broken-hearted (yeah, right!!) to learn that our scheduled deployment to NS Rota, Spain would be cancelled for the West Pac deployment to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan. For those who might not remember me, I worked out of the AIO office (LTjg Jeanine Gregoire). My job was train pilots and AO's (mostly) on running rigging patterns using the Agiflite camera system. Can't tell you how proud I was of each one of you. We won so many CPW-5 Photo of the Month contests that I believe they disqualified us from further participation. Serving with VP-44 was the most incredible and rewarding experience I had in the Navy. From VP-44, I went to the FLAVFACLANT, NAS Brunswick, Maine from 1981-1984; FLTAVFACLANT NAS Keflavik, Iceland from 1984-1987 (hooked up with CAPT Goolsby when he was assigned Chief of Staff, COMFAIRKEF); Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 26) 1987; and finally Naval Technical Intelligence Center, Suitland. I retired in July 1989. If anyone wants to recount stories of sandbagging the MCPOC door during a typhoon in Kadena or bartending naked in Kef, and many more stories, please feel free to contact me. I see a couple of photomates on these pages, will try to contact you guys..." [09APR2003]

VP-50 was the first squadron to make that three way deployment--2 months in each site with 1/3 of the planes and people at each location. Got out in 1979 and moved to London for 6 months. Ended up back in the States and started working at Todd Shipyards in San Pedro, Ca. in the Combat Systems Test team. Never spent more than a couple of hours on a ship the entire time in the Navy and ended up working on new construction FFG's. I found out what it was like to "walk the bulkheads" during heavy seas and the port and starboard 1990's that was done to check the ship. I would like to say that the VP Navy are the best the Navy has but than it was the only Navy I knew than and being a part of the Boomerangs could not have been better. I married my wife, Karen, at NAS Moffett Field, California, and had a daughter, Samantha. I was on NSF Diego Garcia when I got the call that my daughter had died and I flew home from there on an Air Force C-5 so NSF Diego Garcia was the last place I was at overseas. Since than had two more kids another daughter, Saundra a college grad, and a son, Joshua who, like his dad joined the Navy but is on the USS Georgia (SSGN-729) which is a submarine.
