Upon completion of flight school he was designated a Naval Flight Officer and was assigned to VP-45 in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. The '87 deployment was more interesting operationally as we spent a lot of time flying night missions out of Dharhan, Saudi Arabia in support of Operation EARNEST WILL during the Iran-Iraq war. I remember hiding behind a Hawk missile site on the Saudi coast one night waiting for Iraqi Badger bombers to complete their raid on Iranian oil fields. We could even see them on the IRDS as they flew by. '89 deployment included several "fish-in-the-barrel" flights against the Soviets during Spring-Ex. Never had so much contact on one pattern in my life! I departed VP-19 in Feb '90 for a tour with COMPATWING TEN (CPW-10) at NAS Moffett Field, California as Readiness Officer and Asst OIC of the Weapons System Trainer Det. My disassociated sea tour was aboard USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64) as the Catapult and Arresting Gear Division Officer from 1992-3. Being a 'shooter' is the coolest job in the Navy! I left Connie and went to Postgraduate School in Monterey to get my MS in Physical Oceanography. Following graduation in 1996, I went to Tactical Support Center (ASWOC/TSC) NAS Sigonella, Sicily as the Mission Control and Evaluation Officer. The best part of that tour was spending 2+ months in Sarajevo as part of IFOR coordinating reconnaissance and surveillance tasking for P-3's overland in Bosnia. From there I checked my DH block with VP-9 in NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii and MCAS/NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii from 1997-99. I am currently assigned as the XO of Marine Aviation Logistics Support Element Kaneohe Bay (MALSEK). MALSEK is the USMC equivalent of an AIMD and we provide intermediate level maintenance, supply and ordnance support to P-3's, CH-53D's and SH-60's operating from Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. In reference to his daughters inquiry, I also knew Chief Don Kulacs, he was a super guy. I transferred to NATTC NAS Memphis, Tennessee for instructor duty in June 1968. After a tour there I went to VF-14 "TOP HATTERS" aboard the USS John F. Kennedy. From there i did my last tour at the Naval Safety Center NAS Norfolk, Virginia and retired April 1981. I attend 2 years of Airframe and powerplants school and obtained my A&P license in 1983. I then worked for Zantop Airlines on the Lockheed Electra in Macon Ga. POLLOCK, CAPTAIN Thomas F. http://www.history.navy.mil/ar/papa/pollock.htm "...Captain Thomas Franklin Pollock was born in Saticoy, California, on 8 August 1911. He attended Chaffee High School and Chaffee Junior College in Ontario, California and the University of California at Berkeley. For eighteen months, during 1933 and 1934, he was employed by the General Electric Company in Ontario, California. From 1934 to 1935, he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Reserve, attached the 9th Corps. Enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserve in August 1936, Captain Pollock had elimination flight training at the Naval Reserve Aviation Base, Long Beach, California. He was appointed an Aviation Cadet in the Naval Reserve in December 1936 and after flight training at NAS Pensacola, Florida, he was designated a Naval Aviator in January 1938. He was commissioned as an Ensign to date from 1 January 1938. He joined the Regular Navy in 1941, and continued to advance in rank to Captain, to date from 1 July 1956. From February 1938 to February 1943, Pollock served with VP-18, VP-13, VP-26, VP-102, and VP-101 operating from Pearl Harbor, San Diego, the Philippine Islands and the Java-Australia areas. In 1939, he participated in the mass flights of PBY squadrons to the Philippine Islands with CPW-10-. After the loss of his aircraft by enemy action in 1941, he became a member of a Navy Bluejacket Battalion (Infantry) on Bataan. In January 1942, he escaped from Corregidor to Java on the submarine USS Seawolf and in April 1942, four days prior to the fall of the Philippines, flew a PBY seven thousand miles from Perth to Corregidor, and returned to deliver medicine and evacuate nurses and civilians. For these actions, he was awarded the Silver Star, and he earned the right to wear the Presidential Unit Citation ribbon awarded to VP-101 and VP-102. During the period of February 1943 to December 1944, Captain Pollock was the Officer-in-Charge of the Experimental Unit of the Headquarters Squadron, FAW-14, and Officer-in-Charge of the Air Unit at the Naval Ordnance Test Station, Inyokern, California. In 1943, he fired the first rockets from naval aircraft, including the 1,200 lb Tiny Tim and assisted in the development of magnetic detection techniques for antisubmarine warfare. He received a Letter of Commendation, with authorization to wear the commendation ribbon. He was also awarded the Order of the British Empire by the Government of Great Britain. He was then the Officer-in-Charge of Air Support Training Unit 6 and as such developed air support tactics for amphibious operations in the Pacific. In July 1945, he assumed command of Air Support Control Unit #9, which, under his command, participated in the occupation of Japan. From January 1946 to May 1947, he was a student at the Naval War College and General Line School, Newport, Rhode Island, and between June and September 1947, attended a refresher course in multi-engine aircraft at NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida. He had Prospective Executive Officer/Prospective Commanding Officer training at Ream Field, Imperial Beach, California until November 1947. He then became Commanding Officer of VP-4. As such, he completed the first aerial mapping survey of Southeast Alaska, covering over 50,000 square miles for the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service. He received a special award for winning the Flight Safety Award for three consecutive quarters. From June 1949 to July 1952, Captain Pollock was an instructor at the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and in that assignment, participated in the early atomic tests at Desert Rock, Nevada. Following duty as Special Assistant (plans for atomic matters) to the Commander Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, he reported in February 1953 as executive officer of the escort carrier, USS Mindoro. After the carrier conducted early U.S. Marine Corps helicopter troop landing operations for the development of vertical envelopment concepts, Pollock was reassigned to the Staff of Commander, Carrier Division 16, as Operations Officer. In that post, he developed antisubmarine warfare tactics and advanced magnetic detection techniques and participated in the NATO antisubmarine warfare exercise CENTERBOARD critique in Lisbon. He was Atomic Plans Officer on the Staff of the Commander in Chief, Pacific, from February 1956 to May 1958, after which he served as Aviation Budget Officer in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Department, Washington, D.C. Ryan assumed the presidency of the State University of New York Maritime College during a ceremony held aboard Empire State VI while it was docked in Dublin, Ireland. Formerly the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, Vice Admiral Ryan is the College's 32nd president since its founding in 1874. Prior to serving as the 56th Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy, Vice Admiral Ryan was the Commander of the Maritime Surveillance and Reconnaissance Force, U.S. Sixth Fleet/Commander, Fleet Air Mediterranean/Commander, Maritime Air Forces located in NAF Naples, Italy. Before earning flag rank, Vice Admiral Ryan commanded VP-11, VP-31, and CPW-10. Previous shore assignments included the Strategic Concepts Group in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Military Assistant to the Executive Secretary in the immediate office of the Secretary of Defense, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air Warfare), and Executive Assistant to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. In March 1991, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and served as the Director, Logistics and Security Assistance for the Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command. His rapid ascendancy continued when he assumed duties as Commander, Patrol Wings, U.S. Pacific Fleet/Commander, Anti-Submarine Warfare Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet in August 1993. Vice Admiral Ryan graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1967. After designation as a naval aviator, his initial assignment was to VP-8. From 1972-75, he was assigned to the Candidate Guidance Office at the Naval Academy. He then served two years on the USS Nimitz as Assistant Navigator followed by a department head tour in VP-26. While fulfilling those assignments, Vice Admiral Ryan attended George Washington University, Washington, D.C., where he earned a Master of Science degree in Administration in 1975. He attended Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida, through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Four-Year Scholarship Program. He graduated magna cum laude and was commissioned an Ensign in April 1981. Commencing flight training in September 1981,he was designated a Naval Flight Officer in October 1982. Upon completion of P-3 Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) training with VP-30, Captain Tibbits joined the VP-16 "War Eagles" where he completed deployments to NS Rota, Spain; NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal; NAS Keflavik, Iceland; and NAS Bermuda. His groundassignments included Ordnance Branch Officer, NFO Training Officer and NFO NATOPS Officer. In May 1986, he was selected for FRS instructor duty at VP-30 where he also served as Public Affairs Officer and NFO Training Officer. In December 1988, he reported to the Staff of Commander, Carrier Group EIGHT as Aide and Flag Secretary. During this tour he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea aboard USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67), and made Atlantic detachments aboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69), USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) and USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55)while qualifying as a Battle Group Watch Officer/Flag Tactical Action Officer. After two years aboard Carrier Group EIGHT, Captain Tibbits was assigned to the CNO's Staff in the Aviation Plans and Requirements Branch as Assistant P-3 Requirements Officer. Upon completing refresher training at VP-30, Captain Tibbits returned to VP-16 for department head duty in April 1993. During this tour he accompanied VP-16 on a split deployment to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR and Howard AFB, Panama, and a deployment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland while serving as Tactics Officer, Training Officer and Operations Officer. In March 1995, he reported as the Training Officer to VP-30 and later served as the Executive Officer. In June 1998, Captain Tibbits assumed duties as Executive Officer of the VP-5 "Mad Foxes." During this tour he deployed with the "Mad Foxes" to NAS Sigonella, Sicily on the first East Coast deployment of the P-3C Anti-surface Warfare Improvement Program (AIP) aircraft, participating in successful operations in Bosnia/Herzegovina and Kosovo. He also participated in successful P-3 strike operations in Kosovo, and the squadron was awarded the Battle "E." He assumed command in June 1999, and led the "Mad Foxes" on a split-site deployment to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR and NAS Keflavik, Iceland. He spearheaded introduction of the P-3C AIP aircraft into the North Atlantic sector and incorporation of USNR crews into Keflavik operations. Upon completion of command in June 2000, Captain Tibbits was ordered to the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. He graduated in June 2001 with a Master's Degree in National Resource Strategy. Upon graduation, Captain Tibbits remained in Washington, D.C. and again reported to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations where he served as Head, Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Requirements (N780E1) on the staff of the Director, Air Warfare (N78). He was responsible for formulating and supporting requirements for the P-3 and EP-3 aircraft, and continuing development of their programmed replacement, the Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft (MMA). Winneg, a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, was commissioned an Ensign upon graduation from the University of Rochester in May 1980. He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in July 1981. In May 1982, Captain Winneg joined VP-19 at NAS Moffett Field, California, where he served as Legal Officer, Electronic Warfare Officer, and NFO Training Officer. During this tour, he qualified as a Patrol Plane Tactical Coordinator, Patrol Plane Mission Commander, and Instructor Tactical Coordinator, and completed deployments to NAS Misawa, Japan and NSF Diego Garcia. In May 1985, Captain Winneg reported to CPW-10, serving as a Weapons Systems Trainer Instructor as well as the Test Team Leader for the prototype 2F140(T) Fleet Project Team. Assigned to USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) from December 1987 to January 1990 as the Operations Administrative Assistant, he qualified as Officer of the Deck (OOD) Underway, General Quarters OOD, and Sea and Anchor Detail OOD, and completed a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. In January 1990, Captain Winneg reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, D.C., where he was the Assistant Director of Officer Promotions and Enlisted Advancements. In May 1992, he reported to VP-9 at NAS Moffett Field, California. He served as Tactics Officer, Maintenance Officer, and Detachment Officer in Charge of the squadron's Panama Detachment. Following his return from Panama, Captain Winneg completed a change of homeport with the squadron to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. In June 1993, Captain Winneg joined the staff of the Commander, Patrol Wings, U.S. Pacific Fleet, serving as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Manpower/Personnel. Captain Winneg received a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in June 1996. Following graduation, he joined VP-1 on deployment in NSF Diego Garcia, as the Executive Officer. In May 1997, he assumed command of the squadron, deploying to NAS Misawa, Japan with detachments to Okinawa and NSA Bahrain. While deployed, he served concurrently as Commander, Task Group 72.4. In August 1998, Captain Winneg reported to the Office of the Secretary of Defense where he served as the Deputy Director for Plans and Support for the Secretary of Defense's Drug Enforcement Policy and Support Directorate. In June 2001, he assumed the duties as Chief of Staff to the Commander, Maritime Surveillance and Reconnaissance Forces, U.S. Sixth Fleet (CTF 67) based in NAF Naples, Italy.
